Holidays to Bahia Maimon serve up virgin sands, multi-coloured corals and so much Caribbean seclusion they should come with 'Do Not Disturb' signs.
Bahia Maimon is one of the Dominican Republic’s most secluded corners. On the island’s northern coast, this luxury hotel complex has a turquoise bay on one side, a fabulous beach on the other, and is surrounded by miles of rolling hills, making it a really chic retreat blessed with supermodel good looks.
The beach is an 800-metre curl of pale virgin sand that shelves gently into the Atlantic Ocean, so it’s perfect for armband-clad children. The coral reef will appeal to snorkellers, and it almost comes up to the shoreline, saving you the effort of swimming out to it. There’s also a watersports hut serving up windsurfing, sailing, kayaking and body boarding. And bordering the sand is a beach bar that has chairs set among the swaying palms where you can grab an ice-cold drink or a bite to eat.
For such a secluded retreat, Bahia Maimon still has plenty going on. There’s a parade of brightly-painted clapboard shacks on Caribbean Street where you can shop for local handicrafts or get a massage. And the entertainment is first-rate, packing in cabaret shows, Dominican live bands, and late-night discos. Plus, you’re only a 5-minute drive from Ocean World, which is an adventure park, marina and complex with the world’s biggest dolphin lagoon.
Close to Puerto Plata
A 15-minute car journey away is Puerto Plata, a vibrant city that beats to the rhythm of salsa and merengue. Not only are its streets bursting with restaurants, bars and shops, but it also has must-sees like the 16th-century San Felipe Fortress, the Amber Museum, and the open-armed statue of Jesus. The latter sits at the summit of Mount Isabel de Torres and a cable car from the town centre can take you there.
