The area that surrounds Guardalavaca is one of the most laid-back places in Cuba. The region’s beaches are partly responsible for its relaxed atmosphere. There are 20 kilometres to choose from, all with bleached white sand and waters in every shade of green and blue. The main beach, Playa Guardalavaca, unrolls for three kilometres, with coconut trees standing sentry along the sands.

What lies beneath the water is just as attractive. The coral reefs in Guardalavaca rank among Cuba’s best snorkelling spots. The waters off Playa Pesquero and Playa Esmeralda are home to all sorts of marine life, including starfish and clownfish.

Turn your attention to the countryside and hushed sugar cane plantations share the area with nature reserves. The Mensura is probably the most famous national park. This place is fleeced with rainforests, waterfalls and hiking trails.

Finally, Guardalavaca makes it easy to get back on the beaten track when you want to. The region is home to two big towns. Head to Holguin to shop for cigars before hitting one of the salsa bars in the centre of town. Alternatively, make the trip to Santiago de Cuba to research rum in the dedicated museum and see the balcony where Fidel Castro declared the victory of the revolution.
