The 5-star, adults-only Paradisus Rio de Oro gets a gold star when it comes to location. The property hugs the white sands of Playa Esmeralda Beach, overlooking turquoise waters and a beautiful coral reef.
At the centre of the palm-dotted grounds are two lagoon-like swimming pools, both of which wind up to a swim-up bar serving cocktails. Neat rows of loungers and thatched pergolas skirt the water’s edge, so you’ll find plenty of relaxation spots. Elsewhere, there’s a spa, which provides treatments like marine body scrubs and massages for two.
As for dining, you’ve got five restaurants to choose from, one of which showcases international buffet spreads. The rest are à la carte, and specialise in everything from Japanese to Creole cuisine. After dinner, head over to the disco bar for karaoke and dancing.

Until the seventies Guardalavaca was just a quiet sleepy little town located on the north eastern coast of Holguin Province in the east of Cuba. How times have changed. these days it's a well-established resort with an enviable reputation. The resort is still growing, yet its current small but perfectly formed status ensures a low-key atmosphere, which for most visitors is a big part of the appeal. The star attraction remains the beach, with sand the colour and texture of caster sugar, shelving gently into warm turquoise waters. Such inviting waters account for many of the most popular past times, including sailing and scuba diving. Just returned early in January from our second visit to this beautiful resort. The first room we were allocated smelt a bit damp so we quickly returned to reception were we were offered an alternative room which was much better. The staff and food at... more on this review
