Second stay here and expected better
Just returned from our second holiday at the Southern Palms. Loved my first stay so much when I decided to go back to Barbados there was only one hotel I wanted to go to and that was the Southern Palms. Stayed in a first floor room with a side view of the sea. The room as last stay was a bit dated, but clean and comfortable. The staff on the whole were great with a couple of exceptions. We had a few meals in the hotel bar until one night when having our meal the smell of cigarette smoke drifted across our table. One of the guests was openly smoking in the bar which was in full view of the staff who did not challenge this. On the Saturday the water pressure in our room dropped so low we were unable to flush the toilet and had to call maintenance. On the Sunday we were informed that there was a burst water main on the island and that it would be fixed shortly. By that evening we had no water at all. On the Monday we were told it was repaired but a joint was leaking so it would take time for the pressure to build up and as we were on an upper floor room we could use a spare downstairs room in another block to have a shower which had plenty of water pressure. Meantime maintenance carried on visiting with a bucket to flush the toilets, but no water to wash our hands. On the Tuesday still no water but an assurance that everything would be back to normal that day. Still no water that day or the following day. Complained on the Tuesday and was given the use of another room to have a shower still no water for toilets or washing. I did recommend that bottled water could be made available or brushing teeth or making tea. Unfortunately that suggestion fell on deaf ears. We resorted to having to use the toilets in the bar area for 3 days. On checking out on the Wednesday we were offered a free lunch as compensation, but as I had an upset stomach at this time I had to turn this down. On the up side this hotel is in an ideal location for watching turtles nesting. The beach is not the safest for swimming and red flags were on the beach for the 10 days we were there. If you are into sun bathing and not too bothered about swimming in the sea then this is the perfect beach for you. After all this would I return to the Southern Palms, I would probably say yes going by the great time I had on my first stay. Burst water pipes are an unexpected incident, but it is up to the management to ensure guests have the minimum services needed for good hygiene and that is bottled water in affected rooms instead of the guests having to go out and buy their own.More
We a family of 4, two young adults, 18 and 20 and my grandparents and recently just returned from Southern Palms Barbados on the 12th of June, we spent 10 beautiful days in this hotel. Firstly on arrival; the service is helpful and greeted with a warm hello and efficiency is needed after such a long flight. We arrived and was given room 317 and 319 as we requested to be adjoining, if I do say so myself, these rooms are one of the best on the Garden/Pool view complex. The staff who take your suitcases are helpful and lovely. The location of the hotel is ideal, and isn't so much into the Gap, a little on the edge which we prefer, with 2 Chinese restaurants directly outside, and Happy Days Cafe across the road which I can also recommend highly. St Lawrence Gap itself has alot to offer, with plenty of shops and also enables people to get involved with the locals, but as my grandparents have been to Barbados several times, we are already known out on the Gap. When walking down the gap there are people who may ask you if you want to buy something but with a simple no thankyou, you are wished a lovely stay in Barbados. The hotel itself is in the perfect location with the beach directly on the hotel, the grounds are kept immaculate as well as the swimming pool with it being cleaned every day. There is no "fighting" for sunbeds there is plenty to go around and a nice simple relaxed vibe The hotel is one of the best in the gap for entertainment with the steel pans playing a couple of days a week to play whilst lying around or in the pool, my Nana get emotional when "Beautiful Barbados" is played and when asked if they could play, they did, very kind people. The staff at Southern Palms are the nicest staff that we have stayed at in multiple countries, always wished a lovely day and couldn't be more accommodating, in particular Hazel-Anne I believe her name is, is very kind and works very hard for the hotel, the men on reception are also very kind. (Always happy to take photos). It is nice to see the hotel have such an extensive number of staff, investing into the Bajan community. The Management at the hotel are also very helpful and kind people, and obviously run the hotel brilliantly. We ate at the hotel once as we meet up with the local my grandparents know but the meal was very tasty and reasonably priced, that's as much as can say. Overall, the stay at the hotel was thoroughly enjoyed and will be returning around the 1st of June with more of the family!! Thankyou very much for the lovely stay x Flannery's☺️☺️More
