This was our second visit here and it was just as relaxing. The hotel is spread out across a variety of buildings all looking out over a large expanse of Dover Beach. There are plenty of sun beds and palm trees to lie under on the sand, and umbrellas and sun beds round the pools and looking out over the turquoise sea. As there is such a large expanse of beach it never feels crowded and the sounds of the breeze through the palm leaves and the waves breaking make for a perfect day! The hotel serves good reasonably priced food all day in its beachside bar and also has a more formal restaurant. Entertainment is provided several nights a week, including a steel pan band. Food is expensive in Barbados generally, and the exchange rate with the US dollar currently doesn't help, but there are both more and less expensive options within easy walking distance. The best food we ate all week were the canapés at the Manager's rum punch welcome reception. We looked and failed to find spicy fish cake bites or spicy chicken pastries that could compare for the rest of the holiday! Our room was impeccably clean, with a comfortable, large bed and plenty of storage. The view from the balcony was simply beautiful. The bathroom was small, with an adequately powered over-bath shower. The hotel has the potential to be truly outstanding, but it is a little faded in parts. For us however, all the important features were excellent, making the balance between affordability and perfection just right. For example the areas around the pool are clean, safe and well maintained whereas some other parts of the paths and surfaces are more aged. The hotel is well staffed, with numerous, courteous, hard-working and friendly porters, waiters, grounds people, receptionists etc. My only 'complaint' would be that the karaoke bar across the road was somewhat annoying as we had paid extra for sea view rooms this time, but they were in a much noisier location. However it always stopped by midnight so it could have been worse. Barbados is beautiful and the Southern Palms hotel is perfectly located to enjoy the sun, sea, rum and relaxation.More

Easy access to stunning Dover beach. Friendly staff always available to help. Only negative food prices quite high, hence sparse restaurant most nights. Hotel and surroundings kept very clean and tidy. Would recommend.More

Beautiful beach location
This hotel is located right on the beach so the sand and waves are never more than a few meters from your room. You are also centrally located in St. Lawrence Gap with a multitude of restaurants and bars in either direction (also only 15 minutes from the airport). The majority of the staff were helpful and friendly during our stay (Junior and Enrik were a few names). The people in the bar/restaurant were sometimes friendly, but on a few occasions it seemed like they were just going through the motions and didn't even smile or say hello. The food was good and cocktails were fantastic. We just opted to eat at restaurants along the Gap and away from the hotel for most meals, which was very easy to do (and often cheaper too). Our room was not the most beautiful room in the world, but the beds were comfortable and we had an ocean view. The bathroom could use some updating, but it was clean. I had to laugh after reading an earlier review about the complimentary toiletries. . . you actually do just get one small bar of Dial soap. . . and that will hopefully last you for the week! There is wall mounted shampoo and shower gel dispensers, but the soap in the dispenser was a bit harsh for my skin so I didn't use it (and I just bought my own shampoo and conditioner). There is a kettle in the room and a small refrigerator. This came in handy to keep drinks cold and have a few food items on hand for the mornings. Overall, we spent most of our time out of the room so this was perfectly ok. We knew in advance they would charge us for the room safe, which is kind of like asking us to pay them so that their staff cannot easily rob us. :-) But it was worth having a place to lock up our laptops and passports. It was a big safe and my daughter's 15" MacBook fit in there just fine. We did a few days of tours and then a lot of time on the beach. The beach was clean and mostly empty during our stay. We'd never see more than 6 people or so in beach chairs and most of the others were just beach walkers going from one place to another. The hotel next door always seemed crowded with people, but our hotel beach was like a small oasis. There are a few palm trees so if you get out early you can get one for shade and put your chairs out below it. Alternately you can rent an umbrella from the hotel next door for 20 Barbados dollars for the day. We never used the pools, but they were well-maintained and clean. We had a great holiday overall and would probably come back to this hotel for the location.More
Perfect location. Helpful staff. Some minor improvements needed...
The hotel is located 20 mins cab from the airport (20 USD), its a large hotel worth exploring for half a day - tennis, water sports, crazy golf, good gift shop are all at hand. PERFECT location, directly on the beach and it doesn't get busy at all. Food and drinks are good and service is great. Room is good size, AC is ice cold and bed comfy but could do with modernisation ie repair chipped tiles, improve toiletries. Use the fridge, buy water or beers to save money - I bought water at 11pm from the bar and they charged me 17B$ so be warned. Also you need to ask for the Wifi code and beach beds are yours to take. Also some good bars are a short walk from the hotel and car hire place next to Bliss café is great - 93 USD for 24 hour rent to explore the island. All in all we'd come back. A lovely relaxing place.More
