"If there's anywhere on Barbados that comes close to being fun-packed and frenetic, it's the popular South Coast resort of St Lawrence."
'The Gap', as it's commonly known, is kind of Barbados' answer to Soho or the Las Vegas Strip – without the neon casinos and crazy themed hotels! Lively restaurants, bars and nightclubs line the streets, merging colourful West Indian culture with cosmopolitan flair. You can tap your toes to Bajan Roots and Rhythms, party with the Whistling Frog, hear some cool jazz at Time Out At The Gap, or drop in to the Jam Rock Cafe Music Bar and Grill to indulge in some classic hits, washed down with a cocktail or two. The resort's Dover Beach is a fine stretch of soft, white sands, and at low tide you can wander Robinson-Crusoe like along the shoreline to Worthing and Hastings, home to more beautiful beaches and stalls selling a kaleidoscopic array of local crafts. If the sun gets too darn hot and it's too early to party, a spot of retail therapy may be in order. If so, pop down to the Chattel House shopping village and browse the many stores, housed in replicas of traditional Bajan chattel houses. Designed by African plantation workers, these prototype mobile homes could easily be dismantled and moved from one plantation to another. The reproductions at St Lawrence are painted in lovely pastel colours and are well stocked with souvenirs, gifts and more. Of course, St Lawrence is not all about nightlife and partying. You may want to cheer on the tourists at a local cricket match. Or perhaps just relax at a waterfront bar, dangle your feet in the balmy water and, in true Bajan style, let the world pass you by.
