The Couples Sousse takes inspiration from the whimsical Arabian Nights stories – cue Persian-esque décor and tranquil gardens.

The adults-only Couples Sousse is set about halfway between the centre of Sousse and the pretty harbour town of Port El Kantoui, which means you’ve got a string of restaurants and bars less than a 5-minute drive in either direction. The property still feels tucked away, though. It’s half-hidden by palms and has a private curve of sand.

The hotel has been extensively refurbished for summer 2013 and the redesign has been done with Arabian Nights in mind – a collection of 18th-century folk tales that inspired the Aladdin and Sinbad movies. You’ll see romantic, Persian-style influences everywhere you look. Think crisp white walls, curved ceilings, and swooping archways that open out to peaceful gardens and the hotel’s swimming pool.

At dinner, you can choose between a buffet restaurant serving international dishes, and an à la carte that specialises in Mediterranean and Indian cuisine. You can try local favourites like couscous stews and mint tea here.
