On holiday in Mahdia, both endless beach and ancient medina vie for your precious time. And both are worthy! For the beach is one of the best in Tunisia, with great expanses of fine sand, washed by crystal waters and drenched with hot sun. If you're looking forward to some serious beach life, then this is where you'll find it. However, if you like to stir from your beach mat now and again to discover a little local life, then exotic North Africa awaits you in Mahdia's intertwined streets.
Enter the town through the atmospheric Black Passage, which tunnels through ten metres of 10th century town wall. Once built to keep pirates out, it now welcomes holidaymakers into the old town's appealing courtyards, alleyways and squares. If you've snapped up a last minute bargain to Mahdia, then you can carry on haggling for more great deals at the town's many stalls which sell bright kaftans, gleaming silverware and glossy leather. A weekly market piles up colourful souvenirs, whilst the daily fish market offers bundles of octopus freshly spiked by boys with wooden canes that morning.
There's more to summer holidays in Mahdia than beach and shopping however. Visit the huge fortress which dominates the town for far-reaching views of the sea and port, or peek into the solemn 16th century Grand Mosque. Pause at shady cafes in pretty squares, or if you've chosen to stay somewhere like the Thalassa Mahdia, you can always head back to the hotel for a thalassotherapy treatment before your moonlit evening entertainment.
