Your guide to Djerba, Tunisia - Djerba

“Endless sands, unspoilt scenery and a taste of traditional Berber life – Djerba is Tunisia’s biggest castaway.”

Floating just off Tunisia’s southern shoreline, Djerba is one of the up-and-coming stars of the country’s holiday scene. But that’s not to say it hasn’t been capturing hearts since, well, time began. Homer famously described this place as ‘the island of 10,000 palms’ thanks to its lush landscape. And, more recently, it provided the backdrop for most of the desert scenes in the first Star Wars movie.

These days, it’s the beaches that really put it on the map. We’re talking long ribbons of ivory sand that give way to the Mediterranean Sea. The best stretches are on the island’s northeast coast, otherwise known as the Zone Touristique. Here, the sands come with a supporting line-up of hotels, restaurants and watersports. If you prefer things a bit quieter, head south to the sandy strips between Aghir and El Kantara.

Away from the coast, life in Djerba revolves around the capital, Houmt Souk. Translated, it means ‘Market Neighbourhood’, which gives you an idea of the kinds of things you’ll find here. Traditional Moorish buildings look out over pretty cobbled squares. Winding lanes are fringed with craft and antique stores. And Berber traders haggle with the locals over ceramics, jewellery and spices.

In terms of other things to do on the island, a visit to the Ras Rmel peninsula tops the list. It’s home to flocks of neon-pink flamingos and is a great spot for swimming and sunbathing.
