Riad Lotus Perle

Passing the Riad Perle from the alley, with its traditional heavily carved wooden door, you may be forgiven for assuming it would be another traditional Riad. And indeed, it is. You'll find the traditional courtyard in the centre of the building, the ubiquitous hammam, lofty arches, airy corridors and rooftop terrace with awesome views over the medina and out to the Atlas Mountain range beyond. However, this is as far as the similarities go. The Riad Perle, the second Riad in Marrakech from the boutique hotel Riad Lotus group, is an art deco masterpiece, with a monochromatic black and white palette stylishly dressed with multi-textured splashes of deep red and royal blue. Immediately a calming, elegant ambiance is created which allows you to escape into an entirely different world and revel in two very contrasting lifestyles in the middle of Marrakech.

The traditional courtyard is there, but, centred round a sparkling, small, square pool, the décor includes an impressive two-storey mirrored wall dressed with swathes of silver satin, white classical pillars and cool black and white marble flooring. A breathtaking introduction to what is to come in the Riad Perle. Equally memorable is the rooftop terrace with its views over the mystical Dar Pasha Palace, white double daybeds; potted plants, trees and cacti; relaxing corner whirlpool bath and refreshing shower. Another corner is shaded by a wide Out of Africa style marquee gently billowing above low cream couches and the corner fireplace which radiates warmth on cooler evenings. It's a simply magical haven for you to enjoy.

At the Riad Perle you have a choice of five individually themed rooms - Coco Chanel, Kennedy, Gatsby, Manhattan and Newton. The first includes the Warhol print of the lady herself, a zebra skin rug in front of a marble fireplace and blue velvet chairs. Kennedy has a similar sleeping arrangement, with a mirrored fireplace and a red carpeted flight of stairs leading to the mirrored bathroom. Mirrors abound again in the Gatsby room, reflecting the leopard print spread on the bed, plush red carpet and classical pillars. Manhattan is adorned with a large crystal chandelier lighting the large raised bed and deco furniture. Lastly, the (Helmut) Newton room has his striking Big Nude III portrait above the four-poster bed, along with chandelier and leopard skin rug. Also available is the two-person hammam just off the courtyard patio, oriental spa therapies and relaxing massages. The fusion food on offer in the restaurant is another reason to spend more time in the Riad Perle.
