Riad Catalina

in Marrakech , Morocco - Marrakech T rating: 4

  • Central location
  • Rooftop pool
  • Free Wi-Fi in public areas
This beautifully restored 18th-century riad has a fantastic location in the heart of Marrakech’s medina.
Lovingly restored to its traditional splendour, this 18th-century residence in the heart of Marrakech offers a real taste of Morocco. There are just 12 bedrooms and 3 suites, so it has a really intimate feel. Rooms are decorated in bright colours, with traditional dark-wood furnishings, arched doorways and patterned tiles adorning the floors and walls. Some of the suites have private sun terraces.

On the rooftop, you’ll find a small swimming pool and a sun terrace with views of the Koutoubia Mosque and the Atlas Mountains in the distance. There’s a lovely courtyard garden, with shady orange trees, hanging lanterns and wrought-iron tables and chairs. Breakfast and dinner can be served out here. Breakfast includes freshly made pancakes and baguettes, homemade jams and delicious Moroccan honey, while chefs cook up Moroccan specialities, like tagine, couscous and pastillas, in the evenings.

The riad is right in the centre of the city. Marrakech’s chaotic main square, Jemaa el-Fna, is a 10-minute walk away through winding backstreets and narrow alleyways. The souks are a few minutes further on. Hammam and massage facilities are available for guests at the riad’s nearby sister property, Ksar Catalina.

Once the focal point of a great empire, Marrakech stands at the crossroads between the swirling sands of the Sahara and the snow-capped slopes of the Atlas Mountains. Encircled by ochre-coloured walls, Marrakech is one of Morocco's four Imperial Cities. Its very name conjures up images of noisy bazaars and monumental palaces - and not without reason. Take a stroll through its bustling streets and you're bound to hear the hypnotic song of snake charmers' flutes or the melodic wail of muezzins calling people to prayer. Luring travellers from across the world, Marrakech is a magical city that will intoxicate your senses with its mix of cultural treasures, exotic flavours and local colour.

The staff at the Riad couln't have been more helpful. You could step out the door straight into the Medina and the souks. When this got too much it was only a walk or taxi ride away from the new town which was very European. We could recommend... more on this review
