From the moment you pull up outside the Sofitel Marrakech you know you’re in for a treat. An elaborate fountain splashes in the foreground. Sleek marble steps wait to whisk you up into a world of luxury. And a towering iron sculpture of a traditional watercarrier silently greets you as you swing into an opulent reception wrapped in warm tones of peach and cream. Part of the prestigious Sofitel chain, this hotel is in a league of its own. Beneath your feet a sparkling sea of polished marble glimmers, while clusters of velvet sofas call on you to relax.

Wander out to the terrace, through arches dripping in amethyst blooms and let the soothing sound of trickling waterfalls wash over you as you soak up the hot sunshine. Elegant, cushion-plumped sunbeds border a swimming pool encased in lush gardens dotted with swaying palms and succulent orange trees – a soothing spot to cultivate that all-over glow. Enjoy breakfast in the comfort of the elegant Le Jardin outside on its sun-warmed terrace. Savour gourmet cuisine in the immaculately-furnished L’Orangerie and afterwards wander into Le Lawrence Piano Bar where the soft sound of jazz and blues float around you as you ponder the cocktail menu and nibble on olives.

If you’re looking for something a little more private, there’s plenty of choice. Simply pick one of the cosy candlelit recesses dotted around the hotel and enjoy a quiet drink and good conversation. As you’d expect the bedrooms are a nest of luxury. A melange of rich red and burnt amber, rooms are impeccably maintained and thoughtfully decorated and each one comes with a balcony looking out on either the pool, the gardens, or the frosted peaks of the captivating Atlas Mountains. When you’re ready for a spot of pampering, a series of Moorish arches leads you to the replenishing spa, a blissful haven of peace and serenity. Recharged and ready to head back out into the city, you’ll be happy to know the city’s throbbing heart, Jemaa El Fna, is a five-minute taxi ride away.

Your guide to Marrakech, Morocco - Marrakech

Once the focal point of a great empire, Marrakech stands at the crossroads between the swirling sands of the Sahara and the snow-capped slopes of the Atlas Mountains. Encircled by ochre-coloured walls, Marrakech is one of Morocco's four Imperial Cities. Its very name conjures up images of noisy bazaars and monumental palaces - and not without reason. Take a stroll through its bustling streets and you're bound to hear the hypnotic song of snake charmers' flutes or the melodic wail of muezzins calling people to prayer. Luring travellers from across the world, Marrakech is a magical city that will intoxicate your senses with its mix of cultural treasures, exotic flavours and local colour.

On arrival at the hotel we found the staff to be very attentive. You were asked to take a seat and they came over to you to register you into the hotel and offering hot towels to freshen you up. The outside, the lobby and the pool area were well decorated... more on this review
