Holidays in Marrakech take you to a modern city which is a far cry from its former incarnation as a stopping off point on the trans-Sahara caravan route. Yet it still retains a Moroccan mystique and a flavour of exoticism, most pungent in its spicy souks and the famous Jemaa el Fna square, home to fire-eaters and street sellers.

With no beach, Marrakech isn't your classic summer holidays or last minute holidays destination and probably isn't the sort of place you'd rush to take the kids. But travel to Marrakech is perfect for a short break or a more cultural getaway. You can also rely on a very good standard of hotels. Alternatively, if you're looking for that real 'away from it all' feel, why not try the Tikida Garden? It's convenient for the city centre, but with its peaceful atmosphere it seems a million miles from the hustle and bustle of the Medina.

Marrakech is probably not one of the first places you'd think of for cheap holidays. But Morocco is great value for money, not least when it comes to eating out. For real bargain fare you can try Jemaa el Fna, where the exotic food stalls sell everything from couscous to pigeon pie. Alternatively, there are some excellent restaurants around the city, with menus often showing Gallic flair, a legacy of the old colonial days.
