An introduction to Serena Beach Hotel
If we could only use one word to describe the Serena Beach Hotel, it would be 'grand' - because at this luxurious beach hotel there's something special waiting round every corner. Take the lobby for instance. A titanic stretch of parquet flooring gives way to whitewashed walls, towering pillars and lots of intricate Swahili wood carving.
And the scene beyond the lobby is every bit as beautiful. This hotel was inspired by the Kenya's oldest Swahili settlement, the 13th-century port town of Lamu. Cue a series of flat-roofed Arabesque villas sprinkled through gardens thick with bougainvillea. The attention to detail is amazing, right down to the hand-carved doors, winding lanes and fountain-filled courtyards.
Which brings us nicely to the rooms. Combining Colonial touches like floor to ceiling drapes and pedestal tables with furniture and fittings that come straight out of Africa, they're the perfect blend of comfort and character. They're dressed in shades of duck egg blue and sage green and come complete with satellite TV, minibars and air-conditioning.
In the middle of all this, right on the edge of the white sand beach, is the pool area. This sunken stretch of turquoise is surrounded by sunbeds, comes with a swim-up bar at one end and sits in a sea of palm trees that provide plenty of natural shade.
Add to the mix three stylish restaurants, two bars and entertainment and activities that range from tennis and scuba diving to massage and Swahili evenings and you've got one five star sanctuary.
