Pinewood Village  

The Pinewood Village definitely sits in the small but perfectly formed camp. When the owners built it back in the 1990s they bucked the big is beautiful trend and opted for something more intimate - a speckling of little villas that look right at home in their garden setting. Looks-wise, they've kept things really simple. From the villas to the lobby, it's all whitewashed walls, tiled roofs and latticework. Talking of the lobby, here they've combined those white walls with beamed ceilings, quarry-tiled floors and hanging lanterns to bring a taste of Colonial Spain.

There's more of the same in the bedrooms. The white-on-white palette is the perfect canvas for the dark beams and rustic furniture. Each boutique space comes with added extras like a standalone shower in the bathroom and a private terrace or balcony. But if you're after the ultimate indulgence, book a junior suite - they come complete with living areas, double showers and a kitchen with your own personal chef.

On the food front they've really gone the extra mile. They source all their seasonal fruit and vegetables from their own organic fruit and vegetable garden, which means each of the four restaurants use only the freshest ingredients. A buffet breakfast is served in the Bahari restaurant. Tamu Grill and Jahazi Bistro both host a la carte lunches. And every evening there's a themed feast that ranges from barbecue and Swahili to Mongolian and Mediterranean. Plus there's the Peponi Beach restaurant, too.

It doesn't end there either. There are four bars to choose from, including the swim-up bar in the pool. It's also home to Kenya's first five star watersports centre, Aqualand, where you can try everything from kite surfing to jet skiing. And the fact that it's won Tropical Sky's Best in Customer Service award two years in a row is testament to the fact they go all out to impress.
