Holidays in Bakau have more a feel of Africa than you'll find in some other Gambian resorts. Yes, there are the usual resort-style hotels. But there's also plenty of traditional culture knocking about, including shanty-style shacks, colourful fishing boats and market stalls piled up with fruits, spices and other tempting treats. As for the pace of life, that's extremely Gambian. So you'll find it a doddle to stay as loose as a goose.
The Gambia is renowned for its bargain holidays and Bakau is no exception. So, whether you book early or wait for one of those late deals, you won't find your budget stretched out of shape. What's more, cheap holidays in Bakau don't mean roughing it. There are some excellent places to stay, including the one featured by Thomson, the luxurious 5* Ocean Bay Hotel And Resort. The pool is a real sun trap and there are two restaurants to choose from: the Hacienda, an all-day, partly al fresco eatery, and the Ocean Clipper, where Mediterranean cuisine meets the flavours of the Far East.
For a change from the beach, head for Bakau's Botanical Gardens. They're home to the rare Century Palm, which only flowers every 100 years. Alternatively, there's the Kachikaly Crocodile Pool, where you can smile at a crocodile without getting your head bitten off. Apart from that, the main pastime for those on holidays in Bakau is simply relaxing and doing nothing. Sounds like a plan, doesn't it?
