Sol Y Mar Sea Star

in Taba , Egypt - Red Sea T rating: 3

  • Tranquil setting
  • Private beach closeby
  • 4 swimming pools
This beachfront hotel has plenty going for it, with pools and restaurants topping the list.
One of the best things about this place is the dining scene. As well as the main buffet restaurant, there are two à la cartes to choose from. The steak house offers up a great selection of meat, while the Italian specialises in pizza, pasta and seafood. Plus there’s a pool bar, a beach bar for drinks and a café offering oriental drinks.

The pools are impressive, too. There are four in total, including one for the kids. The main one is huge and comes with great mountain views. The hotel’s low-level, sand-coloured buildings are set around it, separated by plant-lined walkways and little patches of grass.

If you prefer the beach to the pool, you’re in luck. The hotel is just metres from a private sandy stretch where you’ll find sunloungers, straw umbrellas and volleyball. Elsewhere, floodlit tennis courts, a small spa and a well-equipped gym ensure you won’t get bored.

As for the bedrooms, they’re well-dressed and unusually large. Each one has been well decorated with patterned rugs and arty prints injecting splashes of colour. Glass panel doors lead out to balconies, while air-conditioning and satellite TVs complete the picture.

Your guide to Taba, Egypt - Red Sea

“All the attractions of the Red Sea Riviera without the crowds – that’s the beauty of Taba, where luxury hotels combine with spectacular scenery and great beaches.”

There’s a kind of romance about Taba. With the Middle East on one side and Africa on the other, it feels like a focal point, and somewhere that’s got to have played its part in history. In fact, it’s never been much more than a stopover on the caravan route and a border crossing for travellers from Israel.

But the reds and golds of the ancient Sinai mountains, the stunning blue waters of the Gulf of Aqaba and the desert landscapes of nearby Jordan immediately conjure up images of sheikhs, camel trains and veiled princesses. What’s more, the illusion won’t be shattered by rows of British pubs or fast food joints. Taba’s bars, restaurants and discos are pretty much confined to the hotels, so you can enjoy the Egyptian sunsets just as Lawrence of Arabia would have done.

Twenty kilometres south of Taba, meanwhile, you’ll find Taba Heights, a purpose-built resort full of luxury hotels, casinos and a championship golf course. This place is within easy reach of some fantastic heritage sites, too, like the Lost City of Petra and the Pyramids of Giza.

Everything about our recent holiday was wonderful, even though there were one or two very minor niggles. The staff at the Sol Y Mar were beyond belief in their friendliness and helpfulness, nothing was too much trouble. The food was extraordinary,... more on this review
