Grand Azure

This family-friendly hotel used to be called the Tropicana Grand Azure. It's just the thing for a luxurious escape with lots laid on. Outside, you’ll find three jumbo pools and a fantastic aqua park with chutes and slides galore. And there’s no end of sports and activities. Plus the beach is right on your doorstep. Inside, meanwhile, you’re spoilt with a buffet restaurant and four à la cartes. As well as that, there are seven bars and an amphitheatre where the evening entertainment kicks off. There’s just as much choice when it comes to bedrooms, too, including family rooms and junior suites.

Grand? Perhaps with Improvements

Not sure where to start with this review, but the best part of this hotel by far is the fantastic service from the staff. I've never met anybody so friendly as the Egyptians and Karem, one of the waiters located at reception, was fantastic and we will miss him dearly. Sabry and Hamed at the beach were also very lovely and helped me learn some Arabic phrases and I am now hoping to learn more to carry on the language! (It goes a really long way with the staff if you attempt to speak a few short phrases). The quality of food in the Aquarium is excellent and the main restaurant could be lovely however the Palestinians completely ruined the entire atmosphere of the place. I've never been so disgusted in my entire life, their children run around the restaurant shouting whilst the parents seem not to do anything about it, and on my second visit to the restaurant during lunch 3 children were picking up all the cakes and then putting them back, some half eaten, after having licked icing off their fingers. The parents even witnessed this and didn't seem to care, which was the worst thing about it. They do this quite a lot around the resort, without respect for the other guests. (The Russians keep their distance but some are very nice). I would definitely recommend, for anybody who gets upgraded, to stick to the Aquarium restaurant, the service seemed to be less great in the second week though, which was disappointing. In our first week, they would take your drink orders as soon as you sat down and always gave you service with a smile, however in the second week, you would have to ask for a drink and they would seem quite annoyed and reluctant to be serving you, this was however after a big turn over in staff, all of the first staff were amazing! The chefs are really great too, the chicken is so delicious, the pasta dishes that are freshly made are incredible also! The hotel itself could definitely do with some updating. The rooms could do with some TLC however this didn't bother us during our stay as we only showered and slept in our rooms so it wasn't a massive issue for us. I would suggest for the hotel to do a deep cleaning of all the bathrooms though, you can see mould in the edges of the grouting which isn't nice and my hairdryer was broken but thankfully I brought a travel one with me anyway. Aircon was also really loud but I didn't expect it not to be. Hazeem our cleaner was fantastic and made us towel art everyday which was a really nice touch to our stay. The gardens are beautifully kept and the pools were quite nice, however lots of the tiles were chipped around the pools, which was a bit of a hazard for health and safety, and you'd have to watch where you stepped because there are some upturned tiles in places and it's easy to trip. The main pool by reception could definitely do with a bit of work too on the floor of the pool and around the sunbeds. Overall the resort is a huge complex and there is lots of pools and restaurants to visit, the lobby is gorgeous and the gym and spa is really nice, however I would definitely make sure you know what you're getting as myself and my dad were told we would be getting a facial which included: a scrub, 2 face masks, a steam, pore cleanse and a face and head massage. When we came to our treatment I had no scrub or pore cleanse, I was also told my eyebrows would be done for free also as an extra however this was never done. As for the bad things, the animation team could do with a little bit of improvement. They were all really lovely, especially Chico, Valentine and Christiana who made our stay really good. The shows in the first week however were appauling, most people left after 10 minutes and I did feel really sorry for the team, they didn't really have much idea of what they were doing and did struggle to get guests up on the stage, at other resorts I've seen much better animation teams. In the second week they really improved though, and on our last night, the dance show was actually quite enjoyable. The daytime entertainment was okay however the way they advertised it wasn't very good. They would have a regime up on the board however it didn't say where anything was and the shows were constantly changed last minute so we were unsure what the show would be for several of the nights. They definitely did their best though and they are all lovely people to talk to, they do take an interest in you too which is nice. I was really surprised when I tried out the snorkelling at the beach as it was really really good and I had never read about it in any reviews prior to leaving. If you have snorkelling equipment bring it with you as it's definately worth it! It's a really good reef and the view of the beach from the end of the jetty is beautiful, particularly at sunset. As for trips, we did the Luxor trip, I definately recommend it however our guide charged us an unoptional extra £15 each, which we weren't told about, as we had to visit this banana island, which wasn't what we were told was included in the trip. We also did the Jeep safari, which wasn't even in a jeep, it was in a 4x4 land cruiser, and the snorkelling we did along side it that day was about 15 minutes, not 45 minutes that we were told. We also did the Bedouin nights and a days diving at Ras Mohamed. The Bedouin site was very commercialised and was not the 'traditional bedouin camp' it was described as. Also, we were expecting to be told about the history of the camp and the Bedouins, as this was what we were told but this was a lie also. We booked these 3 trips from Jasmine Tours, through Peter at St Georges Pub, and we weren't the only ones lied to by Peter, so I wouldn't reccommend booking through him. He also told us he would be joining us on the trip to Luxor (he didn't), his son would be giving us the transfer to the airport (another lie) and he told another british family that he would be doing the quad biking with them (yet another lie). This was a shame, especially as he's British, you tend to trust them more than the Egyptians, but we know for our next visit to Sharm, to book through somebody else. (His pub is very nice for eating and drinking though!) Ras Mohamed is beautiful and definately worth a visit if you're a keen diver, Sharks Reef is great, so ask to go there if you get the option! We booked through the dive site located on the beach, and they were great! In conclusion our stay was enjoyable, but not a 4* plus, perhaps once everything's been refurbished it could be. I would say 4 star, maybe even 3* plus? It was an okay hotel, but we won't be returning again.More

Back again but maybe never again

We have just returned from the hotel. A place we have visited many times. We were upgraded and our room was great if not a little tired. The food was fantastic as we ate all our meals in the Aquariun restaurant an upgrade we gratefully accepted. We did eat in the other alacarte and had great food served by friends we have come to love over the years. We onl ate once at the cattle market, sorry the Marakesh. The restaurant that was filled with ignorant noisy guests who had no respect for anyone. There children ran riot with no respect for anyone whilst there parents took vast a mounts of food away. There behaviour was carried on in public areas making it an unpleasant experience for other holiday makers and staff. The staff have an unenviable task of doing their job whilst trying to avoid unruly children and ignorant parents. My thanks go out to all the staff .They were fantastic in a difficult situation. I will come back , but only if the new management sort out the problems. Lets hope that these reviews have the desired effect and the management takes notice so all of the loyal customers can return. Surely all of us are wort keeping. I will be hoping . More

Rooms desperate for some TLC. Ladies toilet needs some tis please fix the hand dryer1 Air con overly vicious in aquarium restaurant all the time. Spa staff infuriating especially the women who were down right rude when we said no, cheeky enough to say things like you got no money? Gym needs some fly squatters..... Most staff lovely Entertainment dire, totally geared to the russians but overall goodMore

6th time, better than ever

We're just back home after our 6th visit to the Grand Azure, must admit we went with a bit of dread after reading the reviews on here before we left but I can honestly say that we enjoyed this visit so much! We're either easy to please or the reviewers complaining are used to staying in the likes of UK 5* hotels. Yes the hotel is dated and needs freshening up but really, does some peeling paint ruin your holiday that much? The staff here are marvellous. Teyrana please don't change too much where staff are involved as they are your USP. Only complaint we have is the cattle mart in the Marrakech restaurant when guests from Palestine arrived during our second week. Up until then we'd been eating in the Marrakech for lunch but the Palestinians with their huge families that just took over the restaurant, treating the staff and other guests like dirt. I was glad that we had the aquarium restaurant to fall back on as I didn't enjoy visits to the Marrakech after they arrived. Special thanks go to Hamdy, our pool boy, Ali, Mustafa & Hawary at the pool bar, Ahmed & Mo'men at the Terrace bar where we spent our nights with friends made during our stay and also our good friends Mahmoud & Korany in the Marrakech and Akram & Ibrahim in the Chinese. We've already booked our holiday for march 2015 and I hope the new owners have made some of the planned changes and the staff we know and love are still there when we returnMore

Wonderful holiday

Just arrived home from 11 nights at the Tirana Grand Azure resort hotel. On arrival we were treated to an upgrade to use the Aquarium restaurant (recommended) The room was very acceptable. We had read reviews about refurbishing and new management but please, don't let anything pt you off. The hotel is being refurbished in small sections that will not in any way affect your stay. The whole resort is neat, attractive and very well maintained. Gardens, food areas, pools and rooms all to a very acceptable standard. What was surprising is the space. People may have been put off Egypt because of the news and the unrest but it is hundreds of miles away in Cairo. We had an amazingly peaceful and sunny holiday that we really didn't want to end. If anywhere in Egypt I would return to it is this hotel. We took walks outside the resort and the shopkeepers were a little intense n some places but with humour and clear yes or no they were fine. Tips; Take English £1 coins to use as tips - the waiting staff, bar staff and room staff do appreciate small tokens to boost their low income, long hours and the English exchange rate is pretty good. Other tip - Use English currency when haggling over prices - this may help get a better deal and always haggle-it's how they work there. It was fun and I want to return ASAP. Great relaxation. Great resort. Staff are outstanding! We miss them all. Kahled, Ali, Moustafa, Hamdy, Ahmed, Mo'man, Howare, Mohamed. Great people of Egypt, proud and happy people. Liz and LindaMore
