We stayed here 7-17 September 2015. We arrived late in the evening around 10pm. After checking into the hotel, we received no assistance to carry luggage. Our room was on ground floor opposite karaoke (which was extremely loud and absolutely awful) even though we specifically asked to be located away from the pool area. We requested to switch rooms and the reception claimed the hotel was fully booked (complete outright lie and lack of effort to accommodate us). After calling Thomas Cook in the middle of the night to seek advice about our unsatisfactory arrival, we were advised to ask at reception again the following morning. So we were left to stay on the ground floor for the first night and the room was horrendously small for a couple, with poor air conditioning facilities, alongside that our tv didn't work.
As we were all inclusive but missed dinner and reception said they were to provide guests who arrived late with dinner which would be bought to our rooms. After 3 hours of checking in, and complaints made, our 'dinner' still hadn't arrived. We had to call reception twice and eventually I went up to reception to ask for some food. At 2am we received a plate of cheese, with 4 olives, and 2 slices of bread. Can't quite call this dinner but perhaps cultural differences...
After the morning, we indeed went back to reception, and we complained to the front desk whom asked us to call back later after lunch. So, after trying not to get too comfortable, we tried our best to make deal with what we had. At lunch we were greeted the Saeed, who is by the far the most helpful worker at Sol Y Mar who deserves more credit than he gets. We made a passing comment about our stay so far and he assured us it would be resolved and to speak to the hotel manager. After lunch, the manager came out to deal with our complaint and assisted us professionally. He asked us where exactly we would prefer to be situated and after requesting the top floor, we were indeed given a better room.
The service since our complaint was far better, but by no means is this hotel a 4 star rating. Perhaps it is a four star subjective to standards, but definitely undeserving of a 4 star from the type of hotels that we have stayed in.
In fact, the beach facility that is provided the Sol Y Mar, which takes you directly to Jaz Belverdere (to use the beach front there) is a hundred times better than this hotel.
Certainly the hotel manager and the front of house manager have been ensuring our stay has been satisfactory since our initial complaint but it should not warrant a complaint for attentive service at all. The staff however are hard working and extremely friendly, Saeed (restaurant manager) and Yusef (towel assistant), in particular, and it is a shame that the management lacks any true leadership for their hotel staff and guests.
Overall the stay did get better with time, but we would not recommend this hotel to anyone who has any degree of standards or even a level of expectation for a good quality of hospitality.
Everyone who worked here were so nice and couldn't do enough for you, especially the head waiter in the restaurant, drinks were always full and plates cleared away.
Food was amazing, there was always something for everyone. I love middle eastern food so would probably be a much smaller selection for fussy/picky eaters.
Pool area was always clean and tidy with pool staff constantly filling up drinks and clearing up cups.
Entertainment at night in the middle of the hotel, some people say it's noisy but after a day in the heat, it didn't take long for me to pass out.
Huge respect for everyone that works in the hotel, I don't know how they keep going all throughout the day and into the night.
Soho Square is worth a visit, you don't feel threatened or hounded to buy stuff in the slightest. Hotel arranged the taxi for myself, my mum and my sister and he was waiting there at the end of the evening to collect us and take us back (it's about a 7 minute taxi drive)
We also did the red sea snorkeling adult excursion - would highly recommend this! Sunbathing on the boat for a few hours out to sea before coming back with 3 stops on the way. Food and drink included.
Only bad point was the massage man around the pool who makes sure he asks you every day at least twice, just be straight with him from the offset. I don't think he is part of the hotel though so I can't really say it's a bad point against them.
All in all, a really good trip and glad I stayed at this hotel for my first time in Egypt, would definitely return to Sol Y Mar. More
Great time and fun entertainment team!
Very clean hotel, nice pool didn't realise one side was deeper until the end of my holiday. Everytime I wanted ice cream they always run out. Need more selection in the restaurant. Housekeeping made my day with their towel creations. Entertainment team very helpful and great fun. Restaurant team always provided good table service. Snorkelling was great fun in the deep Red Sea. Nice cocktail reception on the first dayMore
What more could you want ?
We visited this hotel as a family around the 14th of July and had the experience of a life time. We delved into the cool outdoor activities the Sol y Mar has to offer and had a go at kicking each others butts with head to head go karting, although it was hot it was worth it !
The hotel staff made the trip even better, they were so attentive such as the receptionist Mohammad once we had arrived. The animation team is certainly one of the most exciting things to get involved with, as the staff were superb especially when my sister and I had nights out with Ahmed, Mohamed, Rhoda and the others :) and they have plenty to do with the children. "Go go animation team!"
My favourite activities with them was certainly water polo!
From my perspective the most interesting thing about Egypt was the culture, that's why Mido's shop upstairs in the lobby was my favourite place to hang out and learn about the culture, was also a great experience for my mum and I to purchase some beautiful art, and I hope to visit there once again.
The guys in the grocery shop and bag store upstairs were also so welcoming and taught me so much.
I loved to learn the language with all the staff at Sol y Mar and hope to be back there again soon.
shookran, bikem, marhaba were just some of the many words I learnt in Egypt.

We were delayed in Egypt because of the terrorosim so Thomsons moved everyone together and put us up in this hotel it was 5 minutes from the airport, the hotel itself was lovely, mostly English people it was good location, the food was very nice even bacon for breakfast but you had to ask for it. The pool area was good, music playing and activities going on through out the day, all in all i found this hotel was a good choice only down side was the flies they were a nightmare i felt like i had tourettes always wafting them away from you, advise is to take plenty of fly and mosquito spray. The rooms were stunning. Been opposite the airport we saw all the planes coming in but when an English plane came in the hotel quests clapped and cheered with the situation been as it was. we were delayed for 4 days but got home safe and sound.More
