New to the Thomson Couples collection, the adults-only Iberotel Coraya Beach Resort is set on the edge of a rainbow-coloured coral reef in Coraya Bay. A private sweep of sand is all that separates the property from the Red Sea, and it comes with a beach bar that serves cocktails. The hotel's sand-coloured buildings huddle around 3 huge swimming pools, one of which has the added bonus of a swim-up bar. Framing the water are thatched umbrellas, palm trees and pink bougainvillea blooms. Rooms are stylish and modern. They're decorated in shades of cream, and offset by smart dark-wood furniture. Extras like satellite TVs and minibars are part of the package, as are balconies that look out over the gardens. The buffet restaurant showcases a different theme of cuisine each evening, plus you've got 3 speciality eateries to choose from. If you want something extra special, book a table at the candlelit restaurant.

Sugary white sands pierced with straw umbrellas. Sapphire seas enveloping spectacular coral reefs. And an ambience as unhurried as the waves on the beach. Marsa Alam does everything right if you love the idea of a quintessential Red Sea holiday.

Growing fast as a major resort, Marsa Alam is a long section of virtually unspoilt coast that stretches from the town of El Quseir in the north to the small fishing village of Marsa Alam in the south, with the new airport about halfway in between. Up and down the coastline, with its mangroves and bountiful reefs, luxury hotels are clustered around swathes of beach like that at Coraya Bay.

Speaking of shores, no trip here would be complete without donning a snorkel or wetsuit. Living coral reefs bask in the shallows, welcoming snorkellers with a visual feast of fish and marine life. And if you’re into scuba diving, the deeper waters spell seventh heaven. Join a boat trip or plunge off a long jetty and you’ll be greeted by some of the most spectacular underwater sights the Red Sea has to offer.
