“A new five-star retreat, the Jaz Oriental offers up first-class facilities and a lovely beachfront setting.”
Brand new for 2009, this latest addition to the Jaz hotel chain is also the most impressive. The real talking point is the location. Set on a long stretch of private beach, the low-level terracotta hotel is just footsteps from ivory sands and clear blue waters.
Just metres from the beach is a large rectangular pool lined with tall palms and plush loungers. Manicured lawns provide additional chill-out spots, while a relaxed poolside bar completes the tranquil set-up.
When it comes to dining, the hotel’s main restaurant offers larger-than-life buffets, with a different theme each night of the week. If you really want to indulge though, book a table at the Lebanese à la carte. And for those al fresco lunches, the beach bar serves up cocktails and light dishes just metres from the sea.
Another great thing about this place is the lengthy list of activities on offer. Sports fans can pass the hours at the tennis and multi-purpose courts, or head to the archery club to test out their bow-and-arrow skills. There’s also a gym here, as well as a spa which offers on-the-beach massages.
Rounding off the five-star facilities are the bedrooms. Comfortable and well-dressed, they’re really luxurious spaces. Think smart cream walls, plush beds and traditional touches in the form of North African detailed mirrors and dark wooden furniture. Plus each one comes with a satellite TV and air-conditioning.

Your guide to
Marsa Matruh, Egypt - Mediterranean Coast
“Hot on the heels of Sharm El Sheikh, the beachside town of Marsa Matruh is soaring in the popularity stakes.”
Set on Egypt’s Mediterranean coast, Marsa Matruh is one of the up-and-coming stars of the country’s holiday scene. The beachside town has been a favourite with the Egyptians for years, with families heading up there every summer to escape the hot desert temperatures. And, slowly, the rest of the world is beginning to follow suit. Fancy hotels and international restaurants have sprung up over the last few years, but for the most part the town looks the same as it did a decade ago. So what you get is a taste of traditional
Egypt. Carpet shops and clothes stores spill out onto the main street, jam-packed markets sell everything from fruit to spices, and mosque prayer bells ring out around the town. As far as beaches go, one of the most popular strips is Cleopatra’s Beach, on the outskirts of the town. Said to be where the Egyptian queen herself used to come to bathe, the bright turquoise bay is backed by craggy rocks and rolling sand dunes. You can also check out the remains of one of her palaces, which is now a favourite grazing place with local sheep. The beach tends to get pretty busy during the summer, so if you want escape the crowds it’s best to head out of the city. Just a half-hour drive away, Almaza Bay offers up clear waters, ivory sands and plenty of secluded spots. The whole place is fairly quiet, with just a few hotels lining its shores, so it’s a great relaxation spot. That said, there are big plans to develop the area over the next few years – a shopping centre, a waterpark and even a golf course are all in the pipeline.
