Great value for money
We visited Sol Dunas for 1 week and it was definitely worth the money! Perfect if you are looking for a nice relaxing week lounging around eating and drinking as much as you like! I would advise requesting a room on a higher floor as there is a lot of cats around the resort which for us was the only issue, they try to get in the rooms on ground floors and are always hanging around in restaurants but don't bother you if you leave them! We requested a different room and we were moved the following day to a bigger room with a beautiful view! Menus in the restaurants could do with a little more choice and you have to pre-book ala carte, but the food was good not fabulous but it was good! Plenty of choice at the buffet which you can visit as often as you like, choice of pools and bars also available. You can also upgrade your all inclusive to 'the level' this gives you access to a couple more restaurants a private pool and extra bar but for â¬50 pppn we didn't think it was worth it as you have plenty of choice in the resort! The beach area is absolutely stunning and a new bar called bikini beach has opened on the beach for late night parties with champagne and loud music. The hotel run a free shuttle bus to Santa Maria town which is worth a visit to see the fishing on the pier and culture in the town, not much else to do on the island as it is very much still up and coming and a lot of construction underway! The island is a windy island and does drop cooler on an evening but lovely during the day even if cloudy. Lovely place and would definitely return if it wasn't for the cats and average food we would have definitely given 5* More
Having been to the Riu Tourag in Boa Vista and having a fabulous holiday was looking forward to our visit to Sal. Reception was excellent our room beyond our expectations. It seems to have gone downhill from here. Due to the Melia Dunas being joined to the Sol there is a feeling of them and us which is not the best. The pool areas are great and the entertainment amongst the best I have experienced. Restaurants and food - herein lies the Sol Dunas biggest downfall. The service we received not once but twice in the Terrazo was nothing short of disgraceful the second time walking out without food. The food everywhere on the complex is far from hot. Selection pretty good but certainly not hot. Bearing this in mind with the temperature far from hot they put on the fans which makes your food even colder. Asking for a drink in the Grill we were looked at with disgust, because we were 2 females travelling together??? I can't answer that one. The restaurant staff could learn from Riu Touraeg. Here they are so miserable. To finalise the sunbeds although plenty are the most uncomfortable you could imagine. They state that if you put towels on sunbeds unaccompanied for an hour they will remove them. That's rubbish all the ones with a mattress were gone by 07.30 in the morning and this is in March so take no notice of thatMore
Amazing family holiday
Hotel was beautiful, staff very helpful and loads of activities for children. My child definitely enjoyed herself. Downside is the food- very chaotic as it was mainly buffet. However there are other restaurants one can choose from with much better food- this is not included in all inclusive. We stayed on an all inclusive basis. I will definitely return but for much longer stay.More
If you want some winter sun at a reasonable price then this might be for you. No great frills but a nice well laid out hotel with good food, choice of two restaurants you can book as well as a big self service restaurant and many pool areas to choose from. Beach at the hotel is very windy and not good for swimming due to big waves and undercurrent - red flag for most of the time we were there. An hours walk, 3 euro taxi ride or free hotel bus takes you into Santa Maria where the beach is lovely and better for swimming. We spent 3 days on the beach here renting a sun bed from the Beach Club next to the pier for 5 euros. Lots to see and not very busy, water nice temperature for a dip. Hotel entertainment OK, depends what you are after, from piano bar to singers in restaurants to open air theatre shows. Service not bad but bookable Grill and Italian restaurants very hit or miss. One night had whole dinner served in 35 minutes and the other waited 40 minutes for our starter. This was a bit like watching a pantomime as they often get the orders wrong! Room was spacious and very clean being serviced every day. Beach towels are 10 euros per person for your stay and you can change them daily but this is a charge, not a deposit, you don't get the money back when you check out. If they don't have towels when you return them they give you a card and you can pick one up the next morning. Great place for watching surfers and kite surfers though be very careful to slap on the sun tan cream as it is windy and you don't realise the sun is so strong. I enjoyed my week and I would go back for winter sun if there was nowhere else available but there is nothing really on the island but sun, big hotels, half built hotels or scrubland. More
