All turrets and towers, the stylish Garopa has a great location, right by a powder-soft beach.
There’s something a bit Star Wars about this hotel. With its sandstone colourings, it’s reminiscent of Luke Skywalker’s rock home.

Step inside though and the desert-rock look switches to full-on North African. Take the lobby. There are giant wooden columns on grand pedestals. Enormous tusk-shaped sculptures. And dark-wicker sofas and clay urns as finishing touches. It’s a similar story in the buffet restaurant. Here, bold mosaics adorn the walls and intricate kasbah-style lanterns hang above.

There’s a distinct African note to the rooms, too. Think candy-pink or blue wickerwork furnishings accented by warm neutrals. Add to that air-conditioning and balconies or terraces and they hit the mark.

Everything is rather smart outside, too. The hotel opens on to a colossal terrace dotted with palms, sunloungers and parasols. Nestled in the middle is the huge lagoon pool, crowned by a swim-up bar under a dramatic Sydney Opera House-esque roof. Peep in here and you’ll see it doubles as the Mambana restaurant - you can try out exotic African curries here in the evening to the sound of the waves.

Beyond all this, you’ve got the beach. A sweep of powdery sands, it features a beach bar and sunloungers. You can walk along the sands to Santa Maria, too - it’s just over a kilometre away.

One last thing. The hotel sits right next to its sister, the Riu Funana, and their grounds virtually merge into one. It means you can use many of the Funana’s facilities.

Your guide to Santa Maria (cape Verde Isl.), Cape Verde Islands

"Santa Maria’s dazzling white sands, brightly painted Portuguese houses and laid-back ambience will sweep you right off your feet."

Sal is a place of dramatic contrasts from its sapphire-blue seas and porcelain-white sands to its honey-coloured lunar landscape. Clinging to the isle’s southern shores is the charismatic resort of Santa Maria. As soon as you clap eyes on this seaside town, you can’t help but be captivated by its mismatched charm – it’s like discovering a Hollywood western film set but laced with vibrantly coloured houses and a stunning snow-white beach to boot. It’s an eclectic mix of the old and the modern and you’re sometimes not sure whether you’ve found a shop or a bar until you poke your head in to find a friendly smile welcoming you in. Take a leisurely stroll through the cobbled streets where you’ll find everything from trendy surf shops to colourful cafés and restaurants. Sit in the square and enjoy an al fresco meal or a freshly brewed coffee as you watch people wander by. Dive head first into watersports galore, such as surfing, windsurfing and diving. Or simply sink into the 8km of duvet-soft sands that dissolve into the translucent waters. As the sun blasts its last fiery red rays across the sky, grab a table at a beachside eatery and sample the delicious island cuisine such as tuna cooked to a spicy local recipe. End your evening in one of the lively bars or head to a disco and swing your hips to sizzling Cape Verdian beats. Santa Maria is, quite simply, the life.
Santa Maria is currently undergoing a sympathetically thought-out hotel development; however, this doesn't hinder the town's charm.
