Cities, sights and sensational scenery...

1

Monday, Marmaris - TURKEY

  • Turkey's biggest beach resort, Marmaris has a definite 'Riviera' feel to it. An elegant, palm-lined promenade weaves its way around the shoreline, while the marina plays host to a flotilla of gleaming white yachts.

  • Ancient and natural history are served up in Dalyan. Sail along the river and you’ll pass the fourth-century Tombs of Kings. Head to the beach and you’ll sunbathe alongside endangered loggerhead turtles, which have been making their nests here for centuries.
  • Discover a Turkish tradition with a visit to a hammam or Turkish bath. They’ve existed since Medieval times and normally have separate areas for men and women. When you get there, you’ll change into your swimwear before heading for the gobektasi, a heated stone where you’ll be treated to a body scrub that’ll leave you feeling really refreshed.
  • Smother yourself in therapeutic mud in celebrity haunt Dalyan. You'll feel film star fabulous in no time.

Wednesday, Alexandria - EGYPT  07:00 - 15:00

  • A medley of mosques, churches and monuments jostle for your attention in Alexandria. The city was founded by Alexander the Great and captured by the Romans after Cleopatra's death so, as you can imagine, tales of old still echo through the timeworn streets.

  • Recall a bygone age as you stand inside Kom El Dekka amphitheatre, the only one of its kind in Egypt.
  • Click a few snaps of the Qait Bey Fort, which was built on the original site of the Lighthouse of Pharos, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
  • El Alamein. Its very name conjures up images of tanks lumbering across shifting desert sands. For it was here that in 1942 one of the most important Second World War battles took place. Under the command of General Montgomery, the Allied Forces halted the onslaught of the Nazi Africa Corps. For the full lowdown on the Battle of El Alamein, visit the Military Museum. The emotive Commonwealth Cemetery, meanwhile, adds a real touch of poignancy.

Thursday, Port Said (for Cairo) - EGYPT  05:00 - 19:00

  • Guarding the northern entrance to the Suez Canal, Port Said is the perfect springboard from which to discover the sights and wonders of Cairo. The first thing that'll strike you about Egypt's capital is the chaos - fast-moving traffic, beeping car horns, calls to prayer, haggling merchants. Everything's a blur, albeit an exciting one. The other thing you'll notice is the fusion of old with new. Traditional bazaars hung with copper-beaten lamps rub shoulders with glitzy, neon-lit shopping malls. There's nowhere like it.

  • Behold the magic of The Pyramids. Set at the edge of the city, where Cairo merges into desert sands, these colossal man-made mountains will leave you with one question - how on earth did they build them?
  • Delve into Cairo's magnificent museum and marvel at age-old treasures like those plucked from Tutankhamun's tomb
  • Get ready to haggle as you dive into the exotic bazaars that are shoe-horned into the city's labyrinthine streets

Friday, Ashdod - ISRAEL  06:00 - 19:00

  • Holy sights come thick and fast in these parts. From Ashdod, visit the awe-inspiring cities of Jerusalem and Bethlehem and see some of the world's most impressive shrines and monuments.

  • Step into a bible scene in the Garden of Gethsemane. This is the place where Judas betrayed Jesus, after the last supper.
  • Stand in the shadow of the Wailing Wall. It’s the holiest site in the Jewish religion and thousands of people make pilgrimages here every year.
  • You don’t need a lilo to float in the Dead Sea. It’s more than eight times saltier than other oceans, which makes it easier to bob about in.

Saturday, Larnaca - CYPRUS  12:00 - 18:00

  • With more than six millennia under its belt, Larnaca is the stuff of Biblical legend. It’s one of the oldest lived-in cities in the world, and the story goes the original town was founded by Noah’s grandson. With that in mind, expect plenty in the way of historical sites, with the likes of St John’s Cathedral and the Church of St Lazarus on the cards. And that’s just half the story. The city’s got a modern side, too, with a palm-lined promenade, a swish marina, and a great shopping scene to its name.

  • Head to the city of Famagusta and check out its eerie old quarter. This place was abandoned when the Turks invaded in the Seventies, and hasn’t been touched since.
  • Pay a visit to Nicosia – the last divided capital city in the world. After the Turks invaded in 1974, half of the city fell under Turkish rule, and the other half remained Greek. Make tracks for Ledra Street to give your credit card a workout.
  • Stroll along Phinikoudes promenade. Lined with cafés, restaurants and bars, it’s a great place for people-watching – preferably over an iced coffee.
  • Make your way to the Troodos Mountains and visit Lefkara, a village famous for its lace-making.

Sunday, Alanya - TURKEY  09:00 - 16:00

  • Legendary hangout of Queen Cleopatra, Alanya’s two-faced for all the right reasons. On the one hand an ancient Seljuk city, on the other a slick beach resort, it’s a place where old meets new and the pair get along famously. Walk around and you’ll notice a lot of places with Cleopatra in their names, even one of the beaches. It’s no coincidence. In 44BC, Mark Antony presented the town to his girlfriend as a present. And as gifts go, it takes some beating…

  • Make your way to the Manavgat Waterfalls, where the river water crashes over low rocks. With their mountain backdrop, these falls are certainly worth some space in your holiday album.
  • You can’t miss it – and you wouldn’t want to for that matter. In the centre of the port is a huge headland topped with a 13th-century Seljuk fortress. About 150 towers punctuate the walls of this splendid citadel. Delve inside and you’ll come across old gateways, Byzantine chapels and mosques.
  • Take a trip to the Damlatas Cave, or Cave of Dripping Stone. This eerie spot has been decorated by Mother Nature herself with some really surreal rock formations.
  • For an even bigger history fix, head for ancient Perge or Aspendos and pick a path through the ruined temples, theatres and aqueducts.
