As if shopping for a holiday wasn’t sweet enough, we’ve gone and made it even better…

It’s quite exciting shopping for a new lipstick, let alone an actual holiday. That’s when excitement levels go through the roof. So, with this in mind, we want to make the whole experience of booking a holiday live up to this anticipation. To really bring it to life. As a brand, we’re pretty forward-thinking – even our HQ’s interior resembles the Starship Enterprise… if you squint – so it’s only fitting that our new shops are as cutting-edge as they come.

Our first next generation shop – location to be revealed next month – will open in late summer. And by Christmas, a further 10 stores will be revamped in the innovative new design, and it’s planned that 100 shops across the UK will be ‘next generation’ within the next few years.

So, when we say ‘next generation’, what exactly do we mean? Glad you asked. Here are the key features of our shops of the future…

- The shop front will have a giant video wall to show off new video content and holiday shots, combined with evocative sounds and aromas (no, not like The London Dungeons…)

- At the entrance there’ll be an interactive map and table to entertain you, and help you research holidays by finding out what products we offer

- The Advice Bar will give you the chance to browse our websites on self-service laptops with staff on hand to answer your questions

- Free in-store Wi-Fi will let you use your own gadgets to delve into our range of holidays

- HD screens and booth projections around the store will display changing images and videos to inspire you, and give you a feel of what to expect from your holidays before you book

- The store will be zoned depending on what stage of choosing a holiday you’re at… you can sit around a laptop in the pool area (beachwear optional), prop up the Advice Bar, or settle into one of our booths, where pics from your chosen holiday will be projected on the wall. Excitement levels at this stage will be at an all-time high, we suspect.

- You can also kick back with a barista-style coffee, because all that choosing between the likes of Mauritius and Aruba has got to be exhausting. We do, however, draw the line at foot-rubs.

We’d love to hear what you think about our next generation shops… tell us in the comments below.

Laura Faragher and Donna Russell in our Product teams discover one taste of Thai is never enough…

Buddhist temples. Long-tail boats. Bangkok’s frenetic markets. These images of Thailand are as recognisable as Maccy D’s Golden Arches. But for the Land of Smiles to get under your skin, for it to really grab your imagination, we have one word for you. Go. Laura Faragher and Donna Russell spent a week getting to know some of the big players in Thailand – Krabi, Khao Lak and Phuket. Here’s a glimpse of their travel diary…

Day 1 – Sofitel Krabi

After a long flight to Krabi, we couldn’t believe our luck when the Sofitel Krabi Phokeethra Gold Resort and Spa gave us a royal welcome, complete with flower wreaths and Champagne (something we might have to start introducing when we get in from work every night…). After wolfing down a delicious meal, we settled in for a night of entertainment, Thai-style… the dancers and fire throwers knocked our socks off. If the Sofitel’s aim is to woo us, it’s making all the right moves.

Day 2 – Hong Island

Early start + ridiculously comfy bed = struggle. But knowing what the day would bring was enough to make us shake a leg. Even writing this feels surreal – a speedboat picked us up and zipped us over to the private and secluded Hong Island, all limestone cliffs, and sand whiter than Simon Cowell’s teeth. After a spot of Thai Chi on the beach while watching the sunrise, we tucked into a Champagne breakfast. We know… more Champers, what a chore. To add to the excitement, we were greeted by an elephant when we got back to Krabi, brought out by a couple dressed in traditional Thai clothing, to welcome us on our return. We embraced our ‘tourist’ sides, and snapped away. Then it was time for some sunbathing. Stretching out on the cashmere-soft sand and taking in the blissfully unbroken view, we were glad of the ‘no sunbeds allowed’ rule.

Days 3 & 4 – Khao Lak

Today we jumped on a coach to Khao Lak, a 3-hour ride away. This resort is relatively sleepy but there are tons of places within striking distance to eat, drink and shop, like Ao Nang. We’d definitely recommend you save some time for a spot of retail therapy – you can pick up a fake Chanel that even Victoria Beckham would have trouble realising wasn’t the real McCoy. And don’t even think of leaving without testing out your bartering skills… you can bag a total bargain, like the can’t-tell-the-difference “Mulberry” we snagged.

The following night we ventured in to Khao Lak Centre – a mere 50 Thai Baht taxi ride away (equivalent of £1. No, that’s not a typo…). We loved The Happy Snapper bar, which combined live music and delicious cocktails… the perfect recipe for a fun night out.

Days 5 & 6 – Phuket

Just an hour’s coach ride away is Phuket, where the scene’s a whole lot livelier… in fact, a night out in Patong is one you won’t forget in a hurry. Banglar Street comes alive at night, packed to the rafters with bars, clubs and market stalls – and the ever-present lady boys, of course. Another must-do while you’re in Thailand is pay a visit to the massage parlours. We only paid 300 Thai Baht (just over a fiver) for an hour-long foot massage, which our feet have been thanking us for ever since.

Day 7 – Big Buddha, Phuket

A trip to Phuket wouldn’t be complete without visiting the Big – and we mean big – Buddha, one of the region’s most famous landmarks. From its imposing perch on the mountain, we could see for miles across Phuket Island. We couldn’t believe our luck when we were blessed by a monk and asked to write a message on a slate, which will be used to complete the serene statue. What an honour.

Day 8 – Leaving on a jet plane…

Before we knew it, it was time to set off home with a half-finished to-do list that’s crying out to be ticked off. What better excuse to return soon? Especially since we’ll be able to fly directly to Phuket with Thomson Airways from November 2013. Till next time, Thailand…

Where are your favourite places to visit in Thailand?

As Gatsby fever grips the nation, we pick out some destinations that’ll appeal to your inner Jay or Daisy…

It’s finally here. The Great Gatsby opens in cinemas today. We’re so ridiculously excited, we’ve been Charlestoning in the lunch queue, and accessorising our work clothes with feather headbands and strings of pearls. Thanks to the release of this hotly-anticipated blockbuster, everyone’s gone bonkers for the 20s. The glamour, the sophistication, the fringing. But we don’t want to just dress like Ms Buchanan and pals. Oh no. We want to be them… to step back in time to a decade where flappers reigned supreme, jazz purred seductively, and gin fizzes were sunk in secret. But, where to go? Here are 3 roaring hotspots in America that would get the Fitzgerald seal of approval…

Miami

The most well-known example of Art Deco across the pond might be New York’s Chrysler Building, but if there’s one city that fully embraces the retro style, it’s Miami. Even though Deco originally emerged to show off the era’s technology boom, there’s no denying it also reflects the desire to look good. Simple as that. South Beach, in particular – think Collins Avenue and Ocean Drive – is a paint palette of pastel buildings, jostling for attention in the year-round Florida sunshine. There’s an electric energy about this town, especially when the crowd comes out to play as the sun goes down. Since it’s all about the hotel scene, throw on a drop-waist frock and some T-bar heels, and sip expertly-mixed mojitos at The Raleigh’s achingly beautiful poolside bar. People-watching comes as standard.

{Check out our holidays to Miami}

New York City & Long Island

If you want to immerse yourself in all things Gatsby, then you need to hit the Big Apple. And disappear underground. Since guzzling liquor was off-limits in the 20s, thanks to a small thing called Prohibition, night owls partied at clandestine speakeasies. These hush-hush hang-outs still pepper the metropolis today – we love The Campbell Apartment in Grand Central Station for its glam décor, and Bathtub Gin for its legendary gimlets. When you’re all moonshined out, retreat over to Long Island’s scenic Gold Coast. This playboy’s playground was Fitzgerald’s provincial muse, and will give you a taste of how high society strove to out-do each other with their lavish homes. Take a tour around the Gothic mansions of the fictional ‘East and West Egg’ – Manhasset and Great Neck, respectively – and imagine the parties you’d throw on the back lawn. Spiffing.

{Check out our holidays to New York}

Chicago

Jazz is to Chicago what punk is to London. Saxophone riffs run through the city’s veins. For those who think the Jazz Age was the bee’s knees, the annual Chicago Jazz Festival is a must. It’s a celebration of all things rhythm and blues over the Labour Day (first Monday of September) weekend, is free of charge, and showcases both world-famous and local artists. The likes of Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald and BB King have graced the stage at the 4-day event, and the line-up always draws jazz buffs who want to enjoy a cold beer and some serious scatting. If you like your music on a smaller scale, swing by the glitzy-fronted Green Mill, a venue once favoured by Al Capone and his mob. Settle into the gangster’s favourite booth and let the soulful melodies wash over you.

{Check out our holidays to Chicago}

Deputy Editor of Wedding Ideas Magazine, Jade Pearson, reveals her top bridal fashion tips for an overseas wedding…

The British weather simply won’t do, so pack your bags and jet off to a sunshine-filled celebration abroad. Thomson Weddings have got the planning sorted for you, but you still have the biggest decision to make… what should you wear? Here are some top tips for choosing the perfect outfit for your overseas wedding.

Lightweight luxury

The last thing you’ll want is to be sweltering in a hefty gown before you’ve even stepped foot on the aisle, so look out for lightweight designs. Chiffons and tulle are the best choices because they look super elegant but are light as a feather.

Blue by Enzoani (left) & Pronovias (right)

Short and sweet

Choosing a wedding abroad means you can break traditions more easily. Short wedding dresses not only look fabulous, they will also keep you cool, too. If you’re getting married on a beach this is particularly useful because the sand won’t damage your dress.

Trudy Lee (left) & True Bride (right)

The Grecian look

Every bride wants to look and feel like a goddess on her big day, and the Grecian look is a sure-fire way to achieve this. Choose luxe chiffon for shimmering style with a one-shoulder strap and elegant embellishments. Complete the look with a sparkly belt for instant glamour.

Charlotte Balbier (left) & D’Zage (right)

Sand-friendly footwear

Trying to walk down a sandy aisle in high heels is not a good look, so make sure you choose a low pair of shoes for the wedding day. Kitten heels should be okay, but we recommend strappy sandals, flats or even flip flops. This will add to the laid-back look of your wedding.

Essential accessories

Your accessories can be both pretty and practical. Holding a fan looks super chic and will keep you cool, or you could choose a lacy parasol, which will shade you while also making for fun photos.

Some more looks we love for an overseas wedding…

Jenny Packham (top left), Watters (top right), David Tutera for Mon Cheri (bottom left) & Mori Lee (bottom right)

What’s your wedding day style?

Forget yoga retreats and babymoons – the travel trend du jour is the digital detox. We reveal the perfect place to go cold turkey…

Picture the scene. It’s mid-afternoon, you’re stretched out on your sunlounger, and the warm breeze is nudging you into an epic nap. Next thing you know, your phone’s shrilly cutting into your Zen-like state. It’s your boss, and in one split second that knot in your shoulder has returned and your head’s swimming with pie charts from last week’s meeting.

Sound familiar? Don’t worry. If you find it hard to switch off on holiday, you’re certainly not alone. In fact, a recent survey suggests more than a third of Britons use their smartphones to check their emails and voicemails abroad. And 41% log on to a social networking website at least once. This addiction has even coined a term – nomophobia. Definition: the fear of being out of mobile phone contact.

Like any addiction, the best way of getting clean is to go cold turkey. That’s where the digital detox comes in. The idea is to switch anything with an ‘on’ button off, and enjoy the kind of break you did back in the pre-internet era. It doesn’t have to mean a fortnight in a Buddhist retreat in Tibet – if you’re looking for a bit of peace and quiet closer to home, our hot tip is Spain’s Costa de Almeria.

Why the Costa de Almeria?

The wallflower of the Costa family, this part of the Andalucia region is more A Place in the Sun than Benidorm. Back in the Sixties, when the tourism boom hit Spain, poor transport links meant holidaymakers never made it this far south. And, even though the connections are now in place, a lot of people still haven’t. As a result, the coastline looks like something off a postcard, and quiet hamlets are squirreled away in the surrounding Sierra Nevada Mountains.

So, rather than lying by the hotel pool trawling the net for celeb gossip, leave your phone in the hotel safe and head into the hills to explore. The town of Sorbas, which grips the edge of a deep ravine about an hour inland, is dotted with hole-in-the-wall craft shops that beckon passers-by with handmade pottery. Then there’s the old town of Mojacar Pueblo, which is the kind of place where lanes barely wider than a piece of string give way to courtyards framed by whitewashed houses.

Even the Costa de Almeria’s main hub, Roquetas de Mar, harks back to Spanish resorts of old, with a palm-lined promenade, seafront restaurants and colourful street markets. And, as you kick back on one of the longest stretches of beach in this part of Spain, you’ll be far too busy taking in the incredible view to even think about checking your voicemail.

UNPLUG at the Protur Roquetas Hotel and Spa. The hotel’s pool is hula-hooped by a lazy river and accessorised with in-water hydro-massage beds. Add three restaurants and a full-blown spa into the mix and logging on to Facebook will be the last thing on your mind.

Thomson Dream gets a Platinum makeover and shows it off in style…

Our first thought when we saw these pics was, “Well, Abercrombie & Fitch have certainly stepped up their game.” Turns out these athletic chaps in question don’t hail from a pitch-black, heavily-perfumed store. They are, in fact, a record-breaking freerunning team called 3RUN. What’s more, they’ve worked on Hollywood blockbusters like Casino Royale and Harry Potter, and can scale the side of buildings with the same ease it’d take for us to make a cup of tea.

Y’know… just hanging out.

The freerunners’ latest stunt involves Thomson Dream, which, along with Thomson Celebration, has recently had a multi-million pound makeover to raise it to Platinum Cruise ship status. We’re talking refurbished cabins, revamped restaurants and bars, and a luxurious spa… and we want to show them off. So, with a drop-dead gorgeous Caribbean backdrop, these world-renowned professionals make leaping over stairwells, jumping from balconies and recreating the ship’s flag (like you do) look like a doddle. All in the name of showcasing the ship’s renovations.

Back in the day, we were pretty chuffed if we managed to shimmy halfway up the big rope in gym class, so suffice to say, our minds are officially blown by their cruise ship antics.

So, grab a cup of tea, sit back, and marvel at their superhero skills… and Thomson Dream, of course:

Chase Armitage – even his name is cool – CEO of 3RUN told us, “The new-look Thomson Dream provided the ideal freerunning playground for us to create some never-done-before stunts that show off both the ship and the skills of our team. In true action-film style we’ve created content that will entertain every generation.”

Well, Chase, you’ve definitely succeeded.

What do you think of the film?

How about a cruise to the Arctic Circle for some serious bragging rights?

Your best friend is heading off to climb some mountain, and your cousin is jetting to a remote desert island. How on earth do you top that? Quite easily, as it goes. As part of our brand-spanking-new line-up for summer 2014, we’re now offering a 15-night cruise aboard Thomson Spirit to the Arctic Circle. Uh-huh, the Arctic Circle. Home of the North Pole, wild reindeer and Sir David Attenborough. And bags more besides. So, what can you expect to see during your ‘Arctic Affair’? To give you a little taster, we’re focusing on 3 stand-out ports of call…

Ny Alesund, Spitsbergen

This settlement on the island of Spitsbergen has a population of 35 people. With any luck they all get on, otherwise the atmosphere in the world’s northernmost post office (latitude 80… no biggie) could be a bit awkward. Although, the fact that they’re all brainbox scientists dedicated to mapping and monitoring Norway’s polar landscape, has me assuming that it’s just like being on the set of The Big Bang Theory. So what’s there to do here? A kilometre-long tourist trail punctuated by story boards will lead you through Ny Alesund, explaining exactly what goes on at the different science stations. You’ll also have a chance to do some research of your own. Just don’t stray off the beaten track. Or you’ll have Sheldon and his 34 buddies to answer to.

Flam, Norway

In Norwegian, the word Flam translates as ‘little place between steep mountains’. Which is no exaggeration. Tourists flock to Flam for the spectacular scenery they clock from one of the steepest railway tracks in the world. The train chugs up to heights of 865 metres above sea level, and you’ll fill up your memory card with birds-eye views of the area’s plunging valleys and mirror-like fjords, as you navigate hairpin bends and cliff-edge tunnels. No need for those knuckles to turn white, though… the railway has been running safe and sound since the Forties. Nothing about this region is mediocre. With its labyrinthine caves, copious waterfalls and rustic wooden lodges, it has more charm than Michael Bublé in a roomful of mums.

Longyearbyen, Spitsbergen

Longyearbyen will have you feeling on top of the world. Literally. Located at 78 degrees north, it’s the world’s northernmost town. It has a population of around 2,000 people – mostly Norwegians – and is home to a shopping mall, a cinema, and a scattering of bars and restaurants. Which practically makes it Disney World, in comparison to its neighbouring communities. Beyond the town’s multihued borders, signs of civilisation dwindle, and it’s all about the nature. Reindeer, foxes and polar bears populate the countryside of Svalbard – the island archipelago that surrounds Longyearbyen – and Alaskan huskies, as part of the workforce, are ten a penny. The best place to take in the striking landscape is from the bow of a boat. Check out the bird cliffs at Fuglefjellet and the deserted mining towns of Grumant, on a boat safari. Once in a lifetime stuff.

We’re gonna make it clear from the get-go… Mexico is not for the faint of heart. In fact, it will take your 5 senses and give them a good ol’ shake. So, if you like your food bursting with flavour, your beaches right out the top drawer, and your backdrops teeming with jungles and mountain ranges – wait, did we mention the generous helpings of ancient ruins? – then we suggest you make a beeline for Me-jico.

And the sour cream on the enchilada is that from summer 2014 we’re offering holidays to the Pacific Coast, in addition to your favourite haunts on the Caribbean side. The Pacific Coast really captures the essence of Mexico – not only does it serve up all the elements of Cancun et al that made you fall for the country in the first place, it also delivers old-world charm in spades.

We’ve got a bit of a crush on Mexico. You may have noticed. So that you can get to know this destination a little better before you go, and start a list of must dos and sees, we’ve created a nifty interactive profile. Grab a cuppa and get stuck in.

Oh, and be warned… that crush is contagious.

Does authentic Mexico or idyllic Mauritius tickle your fancy? Well, you’re in luck…

After our tantalising post last week – we’re such a tease – we can finally reveal our brand new line-up of holidays, all ready for you to book for next summer. And it’s not just long-haul newbies we’re excited about. We’ve got some other new stuff that we want to shout about. So, without further ado, here are 9-and-a-bit reasons to get fired up about summer 2014…

1) Mauritius – Well, this one sells itself, quite frankly. Paradise beaches, rainbow-bright reefs, top-drawer hotels… it’s the place to go if you’re looking for the ultimate in laid-back luxury.

2) Mexico’s Pacific Coast – How does ‘endless golden sands, tropical jungle, and a mix of old-world Mexican charm and cosmopolitan city life’ sound? Pretty cushdy? Thought so. Oh, and you can tickle your taste buds with a trip to the town of Tequila. Cos it’ll make you happy.

3) Sensatori Resort Jamaica – This addition to the Sensatori stable is set on Negril’s Seven Mile Beach (only bloomin’ well voted one of the world’s top 10 beaches by The Daily Telegraph), and has ocean views from every room. Throw in the likes of a swim-up bar and massage huts on the beach, and you’ll be in paradise.

4) Sensatori Resort Fethiye – One Sensatori in Turkey wasn’t enough. So we’re giving it a sister. It’ll be nestled in a sweeping private bay and home to a whopping 5 pools and 6 restaurants. There’s almost too much choice. We suggest packing a Magic 8 ball to help you decide where you’ll swim and dine.

5) Newcomers to Thomson Couples – Kalamota Island Resort in Croatia (pictured) and Protur Playa Cala Millor in Majorca are newly refurbed and ready to join the Couples Collection. They’re both super-stylish retreats if you’re looking for some relaxation à deux.

6) Florida Twin Centre – For those who like a change of scene mid-holiday, why not start with 10 nights in fun-packed Orlando, then round off the fortnight with a break at the coastal resorts of Clearwater or Miami?

7) New Thomson Family Resort – Introducing the Sirene Belek Hotel in Antalya, Turkey. It’s secured itself a prime beachfront spot, wrapped inside a series of 18-hole PGA-approved golf courses. An Olympic-sized swimming pool and a stylish spa add to its already considerable charms.

8) Seats with Extra Legroom – We’re now offering extra legroom seats on a range of our short and mid-haul flights… so you can kick back en route to your holiday. What can we say? Your wish-list is our command.

9) New-look Long Haul – We’ve rolled out some exciting changes to give you the best possible travel experience… a newly designed menu, on-demand entertainment as standard, better-than-ever Premium Club (pictured), and hassle-free family flying. Aaand relax.

And remember… We’re flying direct to Thailand on the Thomson 787 Dreamliner from winter 2013. Night markets full of delicious Thai food, boat trips to James Bond Island, snorkelling in the clear waters around the Phi Phi Islands… tempted?

Which one are you most excited about?

Because sometimes it’s just about the two of you…

Maybe you need a nice, relaxing holiday without your little ones in tow… a holiday that is more ‘infinity pool’ than ‘wave pool’. Or maybe you’re sans kids and crave a getaway where you can hear crickets chirping, not ice-cream-fuelled screams. Either way, if you want your next hotel to be a child-free zone, why not give one of our adults-only boltholes from Thomson Couples a go…

RIU Palace Macao, Bavaro, Dominican Republic

This faultless 5-star is proudly flaunting the after-effects of a multi-million-pound refurb. Our favourite bits of RIU Palace Macao include a glossy pool framed by Balinese daybeds, hip fusion restaurant, Krystal, and all-white rooms complete with spirit dispensers and free Wi-Fi. The fact it’s footsteps from a powder-white beach seals the deal as far as we’re concerned.

Grand Hotel Nastro Azzurro, Sorrento, Italy,

One look at the rooms here and you’ll be sold on the place. With their designer neutrals, silky-soft throws and generous amounts of cushions, they could have been modelled on The White Company catalogue. Days at the Grand Hotel Nastro Azzurro are best spent sipping poolside bellinis, soaking in the hot tub, and feasting on antipasti and Bay-of-Naples views from one of the al fresco terraces.

Hotel Tesoro Blu, Skala, Kefalonia

The words ‘infinity pool’ are normally enough to have us fishing for our passports. But when you factor in poolside perks like muslin-draped daybeds and smoothie stands, we’ve booked, packed and composed the smuggest Facebook status of the year already. Other talking points at the Hotel Tesoro Blu include a funky bar and an à la carte restaurant that puts a contemporary spin on classic Med fare.

Oceanis Beach & Spa Resort, Psalidi, Kos

You feel like you’re working the runway when you walk around Oceanis Beach & Spa Resort, such is its designer swagger. Quirky touches are everywhere you look – from the monochrome bar to the random artwork in the rooms. The spa is capital city-standard and offers some amazing treatments, including a signature one for couples. Meanwhile, the al fresco dining scene delivers a daily fix of dinner beneath the stars.

Nile Legacy, Egypt

If the thought of an ever-changing view appeals, you’ll be glad to hear Thomson Couples has widened its net to include this boat. Nile Legacy traces a route down Egypt’s famous river, taking in big-league sights like the Valley of the Kings. The highlights don’t just lie on dry land, though – the boat’s pluses include a smart pool, elegant cabins and a lounge made for pre-dinner cocktails.

Check out our range of Thomson Couples hotels. Do you fancy a holiday à deux?

We take a look at why this Dalmatian delight should definitely be on your radar…

Brangelina, Beyoncé and Jay-Z, Prince Harry – they’ve all been won over by this little slice of Europe. And to be honest, we’ve developed a bit of a crush on it, too. Here’s why…

1. It clocks up more than 3,600 miles of coastline

Granted, Croatia might not be the first place that springs to mind for a fly-and-flop break. But thanks to a zigzagging coastline and 1,000-plus islands, the country has a flair for beaches (as long as you don’t mind pebbles). You’ll probably recognise Zlatni Rat on Brac Island. With its chalk-white stones and a forest backdrop that looks like something out of Red Riding Hood, it’s the poster child for Croatian tourism. If you’d rather drop off the radar, do it in style by nipping across to one of the Pakleni Islands. Luxe beach clubs and A-list-approved restaurants are the norm here.

2. It’s home to one of the world’s favourite cities

Okay, so Dubrovnik might be a bit of an obvious one, but we can’t talk about Croatia without giving a shout-out to its star attraction. Most visitors head straight for the old town – its spider-web streets are chock-full of Baroque churches, ancient palaces and Gothic monasteries, not to mention a generous supply of cafés and restaurants. But we also rate Mount Srd (take the cable car unless you fancy a hot and sticky hike) and, for a day trip, Lokrum, a nature reserve island about 15 minutes away by ferry.

3. It’s got sights to rival Europe’s main players

Rome might have fooled the world into thinking its Colosseum is a bucket-list must, but Pula’s equivalent is just as deserving of your air miles. Despite being around 2,000 years old, it’s in better shape than Jessica Ennis. Way back when, it hosted gladiator fights in front of 20,000-strong audiences. These days, things are a bit more civilised – the mammoth limestone walls are the arena for Pula’s annual film festival, and concerts by names like Jamiroquai and Sting.

4. It’s got hotels designed to impress

The hotels here are a far cry from the usual anonymous chains. For peace and quiet, try Villas Kolocep. It’s the only hotel on tiny Kolocep (population a paltry 165), so you’ve practically got the run of the island. Back on the mainland, the Hotel Eden has a triple-whammy of a location – it’s got the sea on one side, historical Rovinj on the other, and a nature reserve in between. If city-centre living is more your style, bed down at Karmen’s House in Dubrovnik. This stone-built Venetian townhouse has a prime old-town postcode.

5. You can pick up dinner for around a fiver

No, really. Of course there are some pricier restaurants, but on the whole Croatia is great value for money. It’s outside the eurozone, and because the pound has picked up, you can now get more kuna for your quid. According to Post Office stats, £500 will buy you £55 more kuna than this time last year. And once you’re out there, you can look forward to massive pizzas for around £5, risotto for £7 and carafes of house wine for £6 a litre. So you can order a starter, main and dessert without worrying about your wallet. Your waistline, however…

Well, we couldn’t let today pass without some kind of trickery…

Castaway – a new holiday concept from Thomson, giving you the chance to live out your Robinsoe Crusoe fantasies by staying on a desert island. Just you, your family, and the bare essentials. To some that probably sounds like a complete nightmare (what about hot showers? Hair straighteners? A pool bar?) But others may have already Googled, ‘How to make a coconut phone’…

Sadly for all you Tom Hanks wannabes, it was an April Fools’ joke. Of course it was. We’d never just drop you off and leave you to it. We’re at your beck and call the entire time, thanks to our 24/7 Holidayline number. And to be honest, if Castaway were a real concept, we’d worry about those ‘sleep quality’ scores on Trip Advisor.

Did we fool you? Would you book a Castaway holiday?

Life is like a box of chocolates. Here we tell you exactly what you’re gonna get…

You know the saying – 9 out of 10 people like chocolate, and the tenth is a liar. It cures nearly all life’s problems and is better than, well, most other things. With Easter, our second-favourite holiday (Christmas, you’ll always have our heart) coming up this weekend, we’ve got chocolate on the brain. We’re having it for breakfast, lunch and dinner… and we’re not sorry. But if you’re all Cadbury’s Crème Egg-ed out and you haven’t even got to Sunday yet, here are some alternative Easter ideas to indulge your sweet tooth…

Mint Chocolate Mojito, Sensatori Mexico

We like chocolate, and we like the odd tipple. Therefore, the mint chocolate mojito being served up at Sensatori Resort Mexico’s mojito lounge is pretty much our dream concoction. It’s made up of white rum, sugar, chocolate and lime, which are muddled together with mint leaves. Sounds scrummy. You’ll thank Crunchie you’re on holiday.

‘Southern Surprise’ Tour of Villajoyosa

If you’ve always dreamt of living in Willy Wonka’s world, we recommend the ‘Southern Surprise’ tour of Villajoyosa, in Spain’s Costa Blanca region. It’s known as the ‘Chocolate City’ (I think we’ve found our spiritual home) and we’re making a beeline. During the excursion you’ll explore the history of the city’s claim to choccie fame, with a trip to Spain’s oldest gourmet chocolate factory, Valor. You’ll get a chance to taste their finest sweet treats, washed down with a cheeky chocolate cocktail for good measure. This tour definitely puts the ‘joy’ in Villajoyosa. It’s available from all Thomson hotels in the Costa Blanca region.

Chocolate Body Wrap, Sensatori Resort Crete

For the ultimate indulgence, how about bathing in chocolate? We’re serious. At the spa at Sensatori Resort Crete, guests can opt for a decadent chocolate body wrap to soothe the stresses of everyday life. Y’know, like the stress of choosing which of the 7 restaurants you’ll go to that night. This delicious hour-long treatment combines a love of chocolate with a sensuous flower-milk bath, leaving skin refreshed and radiant. And the indulgent theme doesn’t stop there… take time out to relax among Lyttos Beach’s swaying palm trees and immaculate sands. Bliss.

If you’re a chocolate lover, does this trio sound tempting?

We’re introducing extra legroom on board our 757 aircraft – and it won’t cost an arm and a leg…

Your holiday shouldn’t just start when you get to your hotel, it should begin the minute you step on board the plane. We get that. That’s why we’re introducing the option of extra legroom seats on our 757 aircraft this summer. More room to stretch out equals a happier you. Simples.

So, how much more legroom are we talking? Well, from the 1st of May you can get between 33 and 34 inches of the stuff (84 centimetres, for all you metric fans) when you fly short or mid-haul. We’ve introduced this new offering on board our 757s by removing existing seating and replacing it with the new extra legroom seats.

Up until now on short and mid-haul, the only seats with extra room on our planes have been located by the exits, where children and customers who aren’t fully abled weren’t able to sit. However, our new extra legroom seats are available for everyone – children included. So they’re ideal for families who want to collectively kick back en route to resort.

What’s more, when you book these seats you’ll get the added bonus of access to Thomson’s Select Your Seat service – which lets you choose your seat numbers in advance – at no further charge.

Carl Gissing, Director of Customer Service for Thomson Airways, reveals: “We are continually looking at new ways to improve our inflight products and service to ensure customers begin their holidays as relaxed as possible. Our new extra legroom seats are great for families and couples, offering 33 or 34 inches of leg room. At Thomson we want to ensure everything we do is tailored towards our customers’ needs, and our new extra legroom offering is another example of how we are doing this.”

Thomson’s extra legroom seats cost from £35 per person for a return flight and are available to book from the 27th of March. You’ll have more room than you can shake a leg at. Ah, those leg puns never get old…

Tell us, is extra legroom on your inflight wish-list?

There’s a lot more to Spain than the familiar Costas. We shed some ‘light’ on Spain’s best kept secret…

The northern part of the Costa de la Luz is cut from a different cloth to the rest of the Spanish Costas. The trappings of tourism are few and far between here, so it’s the place to head for limited edition Spain. Here is our pick of the best spots in the region.

Jerez

Just 20 minutes from Jerez Airport, Jerez is the first city you’ll come to when you arrive. This place serves up Spanish culture the same way it serves its home-made sherry – neat. Its historical buildings are still standing after centuries, and its locals live lives of uncut tradition, which includes afternoons in bodegas and evenings in flamenco bars. Follow their lead and head to the dance taverns around Calle Angostillo de Santiago.

Cadiz

It’s possible that Cadiz is the oldest city in Europe. And, over the years, it’s amassed a pretty impressive antiques collection. Baroque churches and 18th-century cathedrals are just part of the city’s architectural archive. If you only see one thing, make it the Torre Tavira. From the top of this 18th-century tower you can see views of the entire city. Plus, there’s a camera obscura here, which lets you inspect the vistas close-up.

Chiclana de la Frontera

Barossa Beach is the jewel in Chiclana de la Frontera’s crown. This 6-kilometre sweep of coast has somehow managed to give tourism the slip. The sand here is so fine it looks like it’s been sieved, and the water is glass-clear. The beach has been left to its own devices at the southern end. The sand nearest to Sancti Petri Island is backed by dunes and dotted with rock pools.

Seville

Seville is a master of all trades. This is a city where UNESCO World Heritage Sites lie around the corner from contemporary wine bars, and where leafy parks give way to packed plazas. The capital of southern Spain also wrote the book on tapas. Wherever you are in the city, you’re never far from a tapas bar. For finger food with a view, head to the bars on Calle Betis, overlooking the Guadalquivir River.

Donana National Park

Thanks to long looping rivers and streams, Donana National Park looks like a giant doodle. And between the waterways, you’ll find sand dunes and marshland. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is a magnet for wildlife like purple heron and lynx. Don’t miss the Marisma de Hinojos marshland. It’s said to be the location of the Lost City of Atlantis.

Clubhotel Riu Chiclana

One of the best places for sleepovers in the Jerez area is the Clubhotel Riu Chiclana, part of the style-led Thomson Platinum collection. Plump pillows and sunny colour schemes means it’s easy to fall into a Snow White-like sleep at night. And manicured grounds, lake-sized swimming pools, and swim-up bars give you reasons to jump out of bed in the morning. What’s more, the hotel is just 40 minutes from Cadiz, when you want to explore.

Thailand hooks in more tourists than any other country in South East Asia. We discover why it’s a winner on so many levels…

If you’re wondering what Thailand’s got that other countries don’t, ‘Khwaam pen thai’ is your answer. The phrase translates as ‘Thai-ness’. It means street food, temples known as wats, and floating markets where longtail boats stand in for stalls. In a country of 513,000 square kilometres, it can be hard to know where to cut your Thai teeth – even return visitors have trouble choosing their favourite place. Those that do pledge their allegiances, though, tend to do it to Phuket, Khao Lak, Krabi and Bangkok. Here’s why…

Khao Lak

Set on Thailand’s southwest coast, Khao Lak is one of the country’s quietest beach resorts. It signs its autograph in white sand – 20 kilometres to be precise. And, more often than not, it’s footprint free. Unlike some of the more southern sun-and-sea destinations, Khao Lak doesn’t accessorise its beaches with bars and restaurants. Instead, the sands here nuzzle up to three national parks. Khao Lak Lam Ru National Park alone is patterned with 125 square kilometres of tropical forest, walking trails, mangroves and waterfalls. Even the accommodation in this part of Thailand keeps things on the QT. Most of the villa resorts and hotels have been built so they’re camouflaged from view. Ideal for living a Swiss Family Robinson existence.

Phuket

Phuket, just off Thailand’s south west coast, is corralled by more than 80 kilometres of coastline, so there’s bound to be a bay, cove or sandy stretch to suit your palate. Patong Beach sits at one end of the spectrum. The daylight beach scene here is summed up by the Thai phrase ‘Mi pen rai’, which has a similar meaning to the Jamaican ‘no worries’. Sunbathers loaf on sunloungers while the sporty parasail and wakeboard in the Andaman Sea. At night, the place plugs itself into the mains, and tourists flow like an electrical current between the cocktail bars and live music pubs on Bangla Road. Mai Khao Beach, on Phuket’s northwest coast, is the reverse of Patong. A virtual vacant sign hangs over the 11-kilometre band of sand here. It always will, too. This part of the island belongs to the Sirinat National Park, so it’s protected from development. Definitely a destination for those who like the best of both worlds.

Krabi

If you want to pull a vanishing act, Krabi is your place. The 150-mile coastline is split up into almost 100 different beaches and coves, and they’re blockaded from the rest of the world by a screen of limestone cliffs. The sea off the Krabi coast is dotted with desert islands, which are contoured by cliffs, beaches and coconut groves. The underwater scenery is just as compelling. Manta rays and seahorses are the natural satellites of coral reefs, while glassfish and pipefish dart between the rocks. You don’t have to be anonymous in Krabi, though. In Ao Nang, in the centre of the Krabi coast, there are plenty of restaurants and bars, offering everything from happy-hour cocktails to Swiss food. But, despite being one of Krabi’s best-known resorts, it’s not bowed to all the trappings of tourism. The 2-kilometre beach is still largely sunlounger free, and traditional Thai longtail boats, shaped like bananas, bob in the waters close to the shore. Thailand with all the trimmings.

Bangkok

Thailand’s capital city is hard to summarise. In fact, entire guidebooks fail to do it justice. Bangkok is the city of meditative wats, holy shrines and markets where humans form tides to swirl between 15,000 stalls. It’s a capital where, at night, monks pray in pin-drop silence as drinkers stream between open-air beer stands, cocktail bars and techno clubs. Then there’s the food. You could do a master’s degree on the cuisine in this city. Out here, peanuts are used as condiments, eating alone is considered odd, soup equals breakfast, and small restaurants don’t have menus. Street food adds another dimension. For a handful of change, pushcart vendors cook up sticky rice and noodles as thick as shoe laces. Indulge in foodie heaven.

Kos. Short on letters, big on personality.

So what do you know about this diminutive Greek island? Once upon a time, you may well have listed Kos alongside Ibiza and Cyprus as potential post-exams ‘I need a holiday with sun and riotous nightlife’ options. We may well have done the same. But in the same respect that Ibiza shouldn’t be judged solely on San Antonio, there’s far more to Kos than the karaoke bars of Kardamena. With that in mind, here’s the scoop on this chic Greek isle. Without a foam party in sight.

Get Clued Up On Kos

It goes without saying that with over 290 kilometres of coastline, Kos is not short of a beach or two. The most popular is Paradise Beach which, as the name suggests, is exceptionally easy on the eye. And, with so much competition in this day and age, it seems beaches are raising the stakes – you’ll notice spa-like volcanic bubbles rising from the seabed and warming the water a degree or two.

What did the Greeks ever do for us? Well, Kos is the home of Hippocrates and the birthplace of modern medicine. So… a fair bit, then. We recommend a trip to the Asklepion ruins, 4 kilometres west of Kos Town. It’s the most famous archaeological site on the island and served as a hospital from around 350BC, where the methods used and taught here were all down to the great man, Hippocrates. He also has a tree, a street, a park, a statue and an international medical institute named after him. Quite the local celebrity.

Kos is known for its Greek Mediterranean cuisine – think succulent grilled meats, fresh fish and ripe olives. Tease your taste buds with ‘spedzofai’, a spicy sausage and pepper stew, or ‘xismata’, a local bread made with mizithra cheese and spices, and wash them down with a glass of ouzo, the national aniseed-flavoured – and rather potent – liqueur. You’ll find your Greek favourites like tzatziki, moussaka and stuffed vine leaves on most menus, or if you’re craving a taste of home, fish and chips or roast dinners are just as easy to track down. For the ultimate dining experience, head to the tavernas on the hillside village of Zia, where the sunsets served up with your supper are real show-stoppers.

If you want to give the economy a leg-up while on holiday, Kos Town should be your one-stop shop. The pedestrianised old town has all sorts of stores if you’re on the hunt for imaginative gifts for your friends – jewellery, ceramics, paintings, leather belts… the list is long. Take a wander through the city’s central market to pick up bargains on authentic olive oil, locally-produced honey and intricately embroidered tablecloths. The air is delicately scented with all the herbs and spices on display. Finally, you can’t leave Kos without one of their famed sponges – a bargain-priced one at that. It would be like leaving France without stinky cheese.

If you do one thing during your stay, make it a daytrip to the neighbouring volcanic island of Nisyros. Legend has it this unspoilt island was created from a stone thrown by the god Poseidon. Trek to the edge of its giant crater and take a peek inside, then spend a bit of time getting to know Mandraki. The main port town gives you a great snapshot of traditional Greek life, with white balconied houses, inviting tavernas and a cliffside monastery.

Where To Stay

Blue Lagoon is a big name in the Kos hotel world. Here’s our pick of the best places to stay…

1. For an amazing pool scene… The pool at the Blue Lagoon Resort needs to be seen to be believed. It’s quite simply immense. Not only is there an endless expanse of water to practise your strokes in, it also comes complete with whirlpool baths and water jets, all ringed by a fleet of stylish sun loungers. Kids can also join in the aquatic fun with their own mini waterpark kitted out with a water-spraying pirate ship. There are exciting times ahead for this resort, with a new waterpark that will be ready in time for this summer’s visitors.

2. For a renowned spa… If you really want to pamper yourselves, the aptly-named Euphoria Spa at the Oceanis Beach & Spa Resort can’t be beaten. The Zen-like space offers treatments especially designed for couples – choose from the likes of hot stone massage or specialities like the Anatolia Mystic treatment. In fact, every corner of this adults-only retreat oozes luxury.

3. For 5T family fun… Once you’ve dragged yourself away from the incredible sea view at the Blue Lagoon Village, you’ll find there are heaps of activities for you and your family to get stuck in to. Work your way through every Olympic sport, like beach volleyball, basketball, table tennis and sailing. Afterwards, satisfy your appetites at any one of the 8 restaurants, including Adventure Grill, an Italian and a Chinese.

4. For everything right on your doorstep… With its swim-up rooms and private stretch of beach, the Hotel Palazzo del Mare sees to it relaxation is never far away. And the village of Marmari, with its medley of shops and tavernas, is just a gentle mosey down the road. Venturing out will be tough, though, what with the hotel’s super-stylish interiors and glamorous touches like whirlpool tubs and private plunge pools.

Have you been to the island of Kos? Or is it on your to-do list?

Philip Treacy, hat-maker to the stars, collaborates with Thomson in an exclusive partnership to mark the opening of the new Sensatori Resort Turkey…

Kate Middleton. Victoria Beckham. Lady Gaga. All phenomenally famous. All have sported a Philip Treacy creation. Philip, arguably the world’s best-known milliner – ‘hat maker’ to you and I – has now teamed up with the biggest celebrity of all. Thomson. Okay, so that might be pushing it… but we do a pretty good rendition of ‘Poker Face’.

This dream collaboration will see Philip designing a limited edition range of sunhats and a bespoke hotel bar to celebrate the opening of the new 5-star Sensatori Resort Turkey, in early summer. We don’t know which part we’re more excited about…

Fashion first. The über-chic sunhat will be available in 6 striking shades… and to complete the collection he has also designed a children’s range which will be available in 3 stylish colours. To whet your appetite, here’s an exclusive peek at Philip’s sketch of the ladies’ sunhat:

Very Sophia Loren.

So, how do you get your hands on one of the limited edition range? Well, from 1st June lucky guests staying at the Sensatori Resort Turkey will be given a hat on arrival (while stocks last) – probably the best gift they’ll ever receive – or, if you’re unable to travel that far in the name of fashion, they will be available to buy in select Thomson superstores across the UK, with all proceeds donated to Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity.

Now on to the interior design. To ensure guests can relax in style during their stay at the new Sensatori resort, Philip has also used his creativity to design a stunning hotel bar. The ‘Butterfly Bar’ takes inspiration from one of Philip’s proudest creations – the famous butterfly hat he designed for Naomi Campbell. It’ll be the perfect setting for a mojito or two.

Here’s what the man himself had to say about the union:

“I’m delighted to have the opportunity to design a limited edition sunhat and bespoke bar at the new 5* Sensatori Resort Turkey. The reflection of the sun on the water creates a light where vibrant colours can truly stand on their own and be appreciated both individually and within the picturesque beauty of the Mediterranean landscape. I wanted my designs to express this vibrancy by combining the beauty with the carefree holiday feeling to add a touch of glamour to the hotel poolside. I wanted the bar to be a place where guests can relax in luxurious surroundings and enjoy the holiday atmosphere.”

Fashion and interiors designed by Philip Treacy, all in one beachfront resort. Sounds like heaven to me.

Find out more about the new Sensatori Resort Turkey which includes 6 à la carte restaurants, specially zoned adults and family areas, and a world-class spa.

Following our first, slightly scary, experience of Indian driving, we dropped our bags at the tranquil Phoenix Park Inn and headed straight for Candolim Beach. We’d arrived fresh from snowy England, so we were looking forward to some serious sunbathing. After a cheeky piña colada, we found a spot in the sun and stocked up on all the holiday essentials from our sunbeds – a manicure and pedicure, new sandals, jewellery – everything is so cheap here, it would have been rude not to.

Later, after an exhausting day of sunning ourselves, we headed to Candolim, where there were heaps of lantern-lit bars and restaurants to tempt us. From traditional curry houses to eateries catering for more European tastes – we were spoilt for choice. The shops lining the streets stay open until late into the night, so there’s always a buzzing atmosphere. Happily our hotel was right in the heart of the action, so it was a bonus having everything on our doorstep.

After a few days enjoying bustling Candolim, we decided to explore a bit more of Goa, so took part in the ‘Back to Nature’ excursion. We drove through some beautiful Goan countryside en route south to Khola Beach. This private stretch of sand is only accessible by travelling off-road – it felt like such a luxury to have a beach pretty much to ourselves.

Once the sun had gone down, we tucked into a traditional Goan fish curry, which went down a treat. Our home for the night was a tent decked out with authentic Rajasthani furniture. The next day, feeling completely blissed out, we took a fishermen’s boat out into the bay hoping to spot some dolphins. Sadly, Flipper and co weren’t feeling very sociable that day, but the amazing views of the Goan coastline from the boat made up for it.

Thinking we should venture a bit further from the shoreline during our trip, we headed to a spice plantation the following day. During a tour of the lush grounds we learnt about the medicinal uses of spices and how they’re grown. Next up was the part we’d be looking forward to all week – elephants! We were lucky enough to feed the gentle giants – who knew elephants liked watermelons? – and take a ride on one through the plantation forest. Definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

On our final evening we took a taxi – an experience in itself – to Mackie’s night market in nearby Arpora. This night bazaar is a maze of stalls selling everything from spices and jewellery, to clothes and homewares. The atmosphere was fantastic, with a showcase of live bands and entertainers. We ordered some delicious food from one of the stalls, and wandered from seller to seller practising our haggling skills. We turned in early that night, as the following day we flew home, vowing that we’d definitely return… next time bringing an extra suitcase for all the Goan bargains we couldn’t resist.

We’d love to hear from you. Have you visited Goa? If so, what were the highlights?
