On Location – Mauritius Day 13

They say 13 is unlucky for some. But not when you’re our blogger in Mauritius. Today he learnt how to make – and then taste – a traditional Mauritian curry…

When trying to decide what the best thing is about the Ambre Resort & Spa, it’s a tough call. There are the obvious things, like the amazing beachfront location…

…or the fabulous pool scene (and yes – that’s an in-water double daybed)…

…or perhaps the tropical setting…

All worthy candidates, I’m sure you’ll agree. However, the highlight for me was the food. For starters, there are 2 a la cartes to choose from. ..

The Italian – called La Dolce Vita – does a mean line in wood-fired pizzas and pasta dishes. I polished off the tagliatelle with fresh tuna.

La Plage, meanwhile, is a beachside barbeque by day and a gorgeous restaurant-on-the-sands by night. The tuna tartare was delicious, as was the lightly-grilled swordfish steak.

But fancy eateries aside, I was rather impressed with Indigo – the hotel’s buffet. I always plump for one of the Mauritian curries on offer. When I mentioned this to the head chef, he organised for one of his cooks (who donned her sari especially for the occasion) to show me how to make an authentic Creole chicken and prawn curry. Check out the video below for the cook-along recipe. Trust me, it tastes as good as it looks.
