Breaking News – Thomson Cruises is going Platinum

A multi-million pound investment means it’s makeover time for two of the ships in the Thomson Cruises fleet.

Cruise Ship - MajestyIt’s all going on in the Thomson Cruises camp at the moment. It seems like only yesterday we announced the arrival of Thomson Majesty. And now we’ve got some more news to share with you all. Thomson Cruises are treating two of the other ships in their fleet – Thomson Dream and Thomson Celebration – to multi-million pound makeovers.

To go hand-in-hand with this, the ships will be joining the Thomson Platinum collection, which specialises in stylish holidays. Just like the hotels in this range, the ships had to score ‘good’ or ‘excellent’ with at least 90% of customers to make the grade.

To whip them into shape, they’re getting big image overhauls. Cabins are being dolled up with contemporary designs and techie toys like flatscreen TVs. The decks are getting an influx of smart furniture and stylish canopies. And, not to be left out, the bars and lounges are being kitted out with mood lighting and touchable textiles.

If all that doesn’t have you booking faster than you can say ‘ship ahoy’, a quick scan of the itineraries on offer will. Thomson Dream – first in line to get a makeover – will spend the winter flaunting its new looks in the Caribbean, flitting between places like Barbados, Grenada and the British Virgin Islands. Fast-forward to the following summer, and both ships will be doing the rounds in Europe, calling in at places like France, Greece and Turkey.

    • Elaine @Thomson says: 17/06/2013 at 04:30

Hi Sam,My husband and I returned from the Springtime Slendours cruise on 4th May.Unfortuneately we both contracted the Norovirus,my husband on Wed.1st quickly followed by me the next day.We were confined to our cabin for nearly three days, coming out at 8pm having to leave the cabin before 8am the next day!i feel we are due some compensation after spending over £2258 on the holiday, losing 3days of it.We had problems with room service on the first day,I had to wait too long for my breakfast,as a diabetic I was feeling so I’ll I thought I was going into a ‘hypo’ through not eating for so long.Your thoughts please.

    • James @Thomson says: 16/06/2013 at 14:57

    Hi
My husband my Mum and I are due to join the Celebration next week (17th June 2013) at Mamaris
We have booked as FULL BOARD – if we wished to upgrade to ALL INCLUSIVE on joining the ship what would the cost be? (if this is at all possible).
Also we are visiting Egypt Israel and Cyprus – Would you suggest we brought a small amount of each currency from the UK OR just changed everything on board. Is the on board exchange rate comparable with a Thomson Travel Agent on the High St?
Finally as we are on a cruise only – is it correct that the crisp new 10 pound note is not payable on landing in Turkey?
I look forward to receiving your reply in time for our first cruise
    Kindest Regards
    Paula

    • James @Thomson says: 16/06/2013 at 11:53

Hi Paula, I’m sure you’re looking forward to your cruise with us. Unfortunately we wouldn’t have those prices at this point as this is something that the cabin crew would be able to advise on. There will be the opportunity to upgrade once you’re on board the Thomson Dream. With any holiday we always advise that you look around prior to your departure for any currency to have the best rate. As you’ll be on o package cruise holiday the £10 fee for landing in Turkey is included so you’ll not need to pay this. I hope this helps.

  5. Mr N Henke says: 09/06/2013 at 18:48

We are due to go on the Crimean Discovery cruise in July 2013 and I was wondering what if any further information was available re the ports of call both ahead of and on board the cruise?

    • Elaine @Thomson says: 15/06/2013 at 05:23

Hi Mr Henke, If you can please advise what information you’d like to know?

      • WOMANSWORLD says: 18/06/2013 at 14:10

I have been on a few Thomson cruises. You can find out about the trips on offer by checking on on line prior to travel. check the Thomson website OR once you are abroad, you will find a leaflet left in your cabin listing them all out – you just tick the ones you want to go on and leave it in the travel office (there is a post box outside it for when its closed). They will automatically book you and and leave the tickets under your cabin door. The cost will be added to your on-board account. Very simple and straight forward

We have cruised with Thomsons for five years and our holidays have all been excellent. We returned from yet another great cruise last week.
However the only fault was the shambles that is Corfu Airport which is
nothing short of chaos. In future we would take departure from Corfu
into account before choosing a cruise. Can a company the size of
Thomsons not bring pressure on the airport authorities to get their act
    together and improve customer service.

    • BILL WOOD says: 14/06/2013 at 17:20

Returned 7/6/13 from cruise, this is our 3rd cruise ,second time on the Majesty great time but agree with Peter Anderson Corfu Airport is a nightmare and would think twice before taking another departure from Corfu.

I have been on about 15 cruises with Thomson, all of which included flying, I am wanting to sail from Newcastle. Can I upgrade to all inclusive
    on these sailings?.
    Many thanks

    • Dan @Thomson says: 26/05/2013 at 14:34

Hi Michael, We do offer our drinks packages on our cruises from the UK. These are available to add during the booking process online, in store or over the phone. Or if you’ve already got a booking then it’ll be available to be added as an extra.

  9. Louise says: 21/05/2013 at 11:05

Hi, My partner and I are going on the celebration in June 2013, I was wondering is the dress code very formal at night? What can we expect to see in regards to the platinum upgrade?

    • Lauren @Thomson says: 22/05/2013 at 02:53

Hi Louise, There’s one formal night on each seven night cruise – normally the Captain’s Cocktail Party where a dress code will apply during the evening. It’s a great opportunity to put on your glad-rags and enjoy a gala evening. A dinner jacket or tuxedo is the norm for men but otherwise a suit and tie is fine. Ladies should be elegantly dressed – a cocktail or evening dress would fit right in. Aside from the formal night, the dress code is smart casual. This means full length trousers and an open-necked shirt/polo shirt for men and equivalent attire (e.g. casual separates or dresses) for ladies. The self-service restaurant is open as normal on the gala night for those who prefer something a bit more casual. If you need anymore information on the ships Platinum makeovers, take a look online here – http://www.thomson.co.uk/cruise/platinum-cruises.html. I hope this helps.

  10. Carol Edmonds says: 18/05/2013 at 23:03

We are sailing on The Dream on 22 June. Last year we were on The Celebration and the laundry rooms were brilliant, has this improvement been incorporated in the recent revamp of The Dream? We love Thomson cruises and having laundry rooms is a big deciding factor for lots of people when fly-cruising for two weeks, mainly due to baggage restrictions.

    • Dan @Thomson says: 19/05/2013 at 01:56

Hi Carol, Unfortunately Thomson Dream doesn’t have any self service laundry facilities, but there is a laundry service. You’ll find all the details and pricing in your cabin once you’re onboard.

  11. Sandy brownfield says: 15/05/2013 at 19:23

We shall be travelling on the dream, in June this year . I have been reading the reviews and have a few concerns about the organisation of trips and customers . Also been complaints about the food quality and a stomach bug going around the ship. Doesn’t seem much of a dream at the moment . Have these problems been resolved , and what should we do if they are not

    • Lisa-Marie @Thomson says: 17/05/2013 at 13:49

      Hi Sandy,
We’re sorry to hear you’re concerned with the reports you’ve read about the Dream. We do throughout the year continually review the quality and standards of all our ships and if any problems were reported then our Resort and UK Quality Teams would work closely with the hotel and implement any recommended processes to improve the overall quality. We monitor the results of our Customer Service Questionnaires, the facilities and performance of all ships and hotels on a regular basis. Although we appreciate negative reports on review sites can be concerning, it’s good to remember that these reviews are subjective and what may be one person’s perfect holiday, may not be to someone else. We’ve had no reports of illness on board the Dream but we would encourage any customers with concerns to raise this with the Holiday Advisors on board so that we can investigate.

      • Steve Hatcher says: 31/05/2013 at 19:58

        Hi Lisa Marie
My wife and I sailed on theThomson Dream for 21 days on the Atlantic Crossing ending in Majorca on 4th May 2013.
I wrote toThomson on our return to report that my wife had been quarantined in our cabin with a mystery ailment. Rough estimates are that over 100 other passengers were also confined. The illness was food poisoning and effectively took three days out of our holiday.
To report on this site that Thomson have not had written reports is simply not true.
The Thomson Dream is a great ship, fantastic staff but there has to be an improved method of food to table to avoid cross contamination and ensure that the food is served piping hot.

      • Adam @Thomson says: 02/06/2013 at 04:45

Hi Steve, Do you have your reference number to hand? I can use this to try and locate your report myself and get an update.

Hi Isabel, The Captains cocktail party is included in the cost of your holiday. I hope this helps and you have a lovely holiday.

  15. Maureen says: 06/05/2013 at 10:45

Hi my patents went on the Thomson Dream on Saturday 4th
May 2013. I had a phone call from them this morning, they paid extra for the drinks package, but they said the drinks package did not include, water, coke, lemonade, juices. They purchased this package as they are not big drinkers and they were told they would not have to pay for any of these drinks as they already paid for the package. I pursuaded them to get the package as my dad has to drink loads of water for his health and this would save them a lot of money. I am a bit concerned about this, can you clarify this please.

    • Adam @Thomson says: 11/05/2013 at 16:52

Hi Maureen, I’m sorry we’ve not been able to address your comment earlier. Water is not included in the Drink Package for free however cans of soft drinks and juices are. If your parents have a concern regarding the package they would need to approach a member of the crew onboard. If your parents were due back to today you can log your concerns with our After Travel team by filling out the online form here – http://www.thomson.co.uk/editorial/faqs/how-to-contact-thomson/complaints.html

    • Dan @Thomson says: 05/06/2013 at 17:27

    • Lauren @Thomson says: 04/05/2013 at 16:19

Hi Liz, You’ll have hair-dryer in your room onboard. If you’re looking to take your straighteners will you, you’ll be able to use the American-style flat two-pin adapter or the round two-pin European type. I hope this helps.

  17. Tony says: 29/04/2013 at 10:56

    Drinks package
I have been informed that if I want to purchase a drinks package, I must purchase one for all members of the party. I only wanted to buy one for myself as my wife is teetotal, so this means I have to pay £398 just for me for the drinks package. Surely this cannot be correct?

    • Lauren @Thomson says: 04/05/2013 at 13:06

Hi Tony, To book the All Inclusive drinks package, it will need to be for everyone on the booking. I’m sorry for any disappointment this may cause.

  18. Debbie Stickley says: 28/04/2013 at 13:23

Hi we were on the dream in Sept 2012 we didn’t book the drinks package but got talking to many people that paid just £69 for the package for a week others had paid more.
We are booked again for May 18th but when I booked I checked the package price and it was showing at £200 each, can you tell me why it varies so much and Why some people get a cheaper package than others?
    Many Thanks is Debbie Stickley.

    • Samantha @Thomson says: 03/05/2013 at 02:44

Hi Debbie, When our prices are first released we sometimes have different offers on and this can include the drinks package at a reduced cost. The offers are only on for a limited time, so we’d always recommend booking up early to make the most of these.
